I went to start my baja 5b and the cord didnt retract all the way. After removal of starter i found the screw holding the winder and cord (covering the spring) would not undo. Any hints on removal as phillips head wants to round. Is this a weak point and is there a beter upgrade on the maket.

Hello David, welcome to LSF.
About the phillips screw, try to tap it with a phillips driver. It will help to reform the contact and break loose any bond inside. Also, try to heat it with the tip of a soldering iron.
As for upgrade, you can go with hex or torx style head screws.
Hope that helps.

Chop Suey.

alot of us pulled the center piece out of hte baja ps, and cleaned out all the greese, then added Graphite dry lube. it helps. after a few gallons the PS will Loosen up some and be easier to use.
the phillips screw just goes into a plastic piece, so it SHOULD come out without TOO much trouble. i use the phillips on my Sparkplug wrench. works good for me.

I Shall give that a go this weekend. Found a good bmx track in the city. Keeps me coming back :clown: . But looking at the forums the beach looks like the place to go. Thanks

i broke my pull starter cord right in the middle, i tried to rig it with what i have left but it takes a while to start and i look like a dork doing it , it looks like no one sells just the rope am i stuck buying the 25 doller kit or is there a better idea that i could do, :helpsmilie:

Hey MarderBeet, go to Lowe's, Home Depot or any hardware store and buy some 'utility rope' that is about the same thickness or a little smaller. I got 25 feet for a few dollars.

I tried to fix my ps a while back and the torsion spring that recoils the rope came unhooked from the tabs. I ended up taking the entire assembly apart, cleaning everything thoroughly and used graphite as a lube when putting it back together. Once you fiddle with it a little while it will make sense how it all goes back together.

HPI has a good how-to somewhere how to clean a pull-start. It is a generic pull-start so the instructions are good for any Zenoah, CY, etc gas engine.

Here's a link to the pullstart cleaning

My starter did the same thing. I had washed the grass and dirt off the buggy and in doing so i washed all the oil off the pullstart. i hit it with a shot of WD-40 and pulled the rope a few times and what do you know it works. Amazing what a little oil can do.

i got some nice rope from Tractor Supply 25 feet. of the same diameter nylon smooth brade for like 8.00. it WONT brake, atleast not without tossing the car/baja 40 feet trying to brake it.

i was putting it together today and the darn thing scared the crap out of me when it reqoiled on me and what a pain to put back together, but i can do it esier next time. (thanks timmahh)the rope was a breeze to find but the dry lube in the spray can is what to use right or the little bottle of powder in the key dept.????

I was using the pull start but then after a few pulls it would not recoil so i tried fixing it by opeing it, long story short lost my patience and kinda messed up the metal spring, so I was wondering if i can just buy a new pull start? are all pull starts universal? i think i have a generic type nitro rc car? any help will be great thanks for reading

Gator, you ll prolly have better luck on www.RCNitorTalk.com. considering this site is more of a large scale R/C site with Gas motors being the power source.

RC Nitro Talk, one of LSF sister sites, is dedicated to Nitro and electric rcs like the one you have.
im positive people here could help, but you ll find more dedicated help on the nitro rc there.

now that that is out of the way. no P/S on nitro are not universal. you ll need to find a P/S that will fit on the motor you have. it maybe tricky, but first what does the one way bearing in the P/S look like, is it hexoganal like a stop sign or round with 2 flat sides. im thinking hex. 2nd what size is the motor and what brand name is it. you ll need to know those 3 things to find a suitable replacement.

on another note, take the P/S into your local hobby shop, they should be able to help nail down a suitable replacement P/S or even spring for the stock P/S you broke.

i would look at an ofna/cen/hpi starter for a .15 or .18 motor. most of them are pretty standard, but a few have funky bolt paterns, and if your bolts don't line up, then.....

but you should be albe to find a suitable replacement. you can also maybe use a starter box, if the flywheel is open and accessable from the bottom of the chassis.

cool i guess its safe to say that the local hobby shop should have a p/s in stock. Starter box sounds interesting but i don't know how they actually work? the bottom of the chassis is not accessible so i think i cant?

Hey i was curious, i was checking out some stuff on "remote starter" saw a video were a guy turn on the car with a button on the controller, do you know anything about that? Thanks anyways for all your help

update: found out the chassis is accessible( after a closer look)cool

depends, if he started it off a controller button, then he most likely modded a traxxas with an easystart system to work with a servo and such. would be pretty tricky to do, but not impossible, but not very practicle either.

most LHSs should have a ps on hand, but what brand may prove tricky. some only carry one brand of item like Traxxas, others carry more.

if you can see your flywheel and its accessable via the bottom of the chassis, then you can probably use it. you ll need one that will work with a 1/10th onroad rc car. ofna makes one thats like 50 or 60 bux, usd. you can get them on ebay for less.

heres a pic of my starter box so you have an idea what they look like how they work. you just set it up with stops that the front a arms set against, which positions the flywheel on the motor to be over top of the starter box wheel. push down with glow ignitor on the plug, the downward pressure engauges the wheel and spins the starterbox wheel. when you push downa bit farther, you push the flywheel into the starter wheel, which spins the nitor motor, with the glow ignitor attatched to the glow plug, it starts when the nitor gets into the motor.

Wow thanks for explaing that for me and with pic cant get any cooler. thank you for your time I am truly gratefull

for the starter box the stick packs can you open those and insert battrys or not?
