i am just getting into the 1/5 scale rc hobby. i am currently stationed over seas and was looking to order something for my homecoming. i have a budget of $1500. i am wanting to know if the dbxl is a good buggy to get started with? or is there a better more reliable buggy out there to start with. i went on largescalerc.com and they have the dbxl for $940 with the option to change out the size of the motor. should i do this and if so what size is a good size to go with? what is some must haves to keep the buggy in good working order? any help would be great.

I have a DBXL but have only run a couple of tanks of fuel through it. It's fun for me with the 23cc engine and I'll likely stay with that, but I'm an older hobbyist. Younger folks may want more pop out of their buggy engine. It gets up to speed with the 23cc bit it takes a moment or two. More power will be harder on pins in dog bones and so on. For your budget you could look at a 5ive roller and put in what you want for an engine, servos, tx, and rx, or you can get an RTR 5ive right on your budget with a 29cc engine. The 5ive has a heavier chassis and beefier components as compared to the DBXL. I don't ever plan on running my DBXL real hard so I think it will be alright for me. It's an entry level fifth scale and you just need to keep that in mind.

thanks for the advise guys. i just put the order in for the losi 5ive t 4wd rtf with abc technology. i can't wait to open the box and set it all up. any suggestion on things to look for before filling up with gas and starting the engine? i need the truck to last a little while before braking down or my wife will kill me. lol

I completely disassembled my dbxl, making sure things that needed loctite had it, making sure the diffs had fluid in them, making sure things were tightened correctly. Learning how the machine comes apart and goes back together is always a good thing to know in this hobby. Might be over the top for some but I think it pays off big time. As a minimum check every grub screw, screw, bolt and nut you can get to, check your pinion and spur clearance, set your servo end points, break it in according to manual, and have gobs of fun.

Use good, non-ethanol, high octane (+91) fuel and a quality 2 stroke oil. Blue Loctite on all metal to metal fasteners, especially parts that vibrate. Keep those radio batteries peaked full charge and install a 3rd. channel kill switch such as a killer bee. Run a little on the rich side (light blue exhaust trail of smoke) for the first tank or two, then tune for power and performance. Plug color should be dry brown. Have fun and enjoy the noise!
