hey all, I know these types of threads are a dime a dozen, but looking for some help choosing a fifth scale.

I had a duratrax fire hammer for a moment, it was unupgradeable, so it got traded.

I've scoured the market and found a few I'm trying to pick between. My biggest concern above all is bash ability and air control. When I drive my 1/8 scale and smaller stuff, I can easily flick the brakes or throttle while its in the air and level it out. Do any of the big trucks/buggies allow for that? The driving I do is fast and high, as much of both as possible!! Also, which is the most durable after putting on upgrades galore? My short list is below...no KV5, it's too much money and way too heavy for me. Bear in mind whatever I buy is getting an RCMAX70 so I'll need room for that thing... I've looked at everything out there and I need that engine, I want it so bad it makes my wife jealous!

MCD RR5; would that engine fit?
Redcat Rampage MT; durable? Redcat has a bad rep from what I've heard. Most cost effective option by far.
Losi DBXL; heard this model is junk, can someone enlighten me?
HPI 5b, 5SC; 2wd I like, but will it have air control like I want? Can the giant motors fit in there?

And that's it. Open to suggestions as I know there are more out there I've not seen. 5T didn't make the cut because I don't like the look of it, and the MTXL seems like a big turd.

Bear in mind if it's something I can upgrade entirely or close, I'll just piece one together with each upgrade part. Long project, but I get sick of buying rollers as templates and selling the RTR parts at a huge loss.

Thanks in advance!

Well, I've been doing a lot of looking and thinking and the Vekta would be my first choice(finally got my wife to OK the price), but I don't see the big rc Max engine sitting in there...which is unfortunate. So I've gone back to rethinking the engine options. Watching YouTube, it seems like the Vekta is slow compared to almost anything else out there with a similar sized engine. Presumably, it's a stock G320, which leaves room for upgrades, but I can't see it getting much more power with a carb, pipe, etc... Or?

So I found myself looking at the OBR full mod with 9.4hp, or the rc max 46 with an unknown horsepower amount but certainly a bunch more.

Maybe the question i should be asking is what it takes to get a 40 pound truck moving? Being used to brushless, and smaller vehicles, I don't want to spend $3k on a big boy and get bored immediately with it being slow.

Get a brushless 5ive, plenty of upgrades,,,,not needed, plenty of power, speed for bashing.. For $3K, you can bash the crap out of it.

Try contacting ddm to see if the rcmax70 would fit in the Vekta. That truck seems to jump and takes landings well from all the vids I seen plus that solid rear is nice for any hill climbing you might wanna do. To me, a perfect basher. I would say your looking at 3k with either option you choose, pretty sure that rcmax engine is over a grand in it's self.

I tried contacting rcmax and am waiting to hear back. Mi didn't even think of contacting the boys at DDM, will do. I hear their service is top notch.

OK...so I've been looking at my options for a while now, and I'm stumped. Talked to DDM and got a bit of a schooling on the Vekta. Point blank...it will NOT accomodate the rcmax motors, or any of the motors bigger than 340 given the need for a custom pipe. Of course, I could get one, but the weight would be even greater and slinging that much weight around will result in breaks, so the Vekta is out...sadly.

The bajas(5b/5t) are concerning from a design standpoint. They are overly expensive for being 10 year old technology. That said, I'm still looking at them given the low weight and insane amount of "new tech" parts available. Still looking into that.... I really want to piece one together from scratch!

Lastly, the dbxl is back on my radar. I like the design as it's very truggy-ish, and the parts are more up to date. My concern here is the cost for something that needs upgrades to take a beating. If I could find a decent deal on a roller that would be the winner, but...I can't find a decent deal on a roller.

Thoughts? Totally open to suggestions or corrections based on my continued search for the right 1/5.

I've bashed the poop out of my dbxl and haven't had anything break besides putting the sparkplug through the roof and had to swap out a new plug wire. Mine is also upgraded with a team chase chassis, chassis braces, clutch carrier and a ported g320 all from bartolone racing.

I'm real surprised the vekta won't accommodate the big engines. Have you considered the 5ive? They recently came out with the 5ive-B. More of a racer but looks bad ass. Proven tough platform. You could also get an ocbaja conversion for the 5ive-t if you dig the look. DBXL and the RCMK buggy's have a lot of complaints. Have 2 guys that I race with buy the RCMK. They both sold them within the first season of owning.

Old proven technology, no need to reinvent the wheel. Dozens of aftermarket parts...

Its your first gasser of many you could possibly have on 1/5th scale. Will benefit you on getting that foot on the door and what it takes on 2 stroke 1/5 line. No need to go over board on an engine, a basic 30.5cc engine will do the job, for most things, anything more powerful and expect burned clutches, diffs, more tear and wear.
