(You Tube video, first start, idle)

(Pictures taken with Nikon D60, 18-55mm VR) I am impressed, the quality of the truck is phenomenal.

Its so true, moving into my 2nd 1/5 scale.

I decided to open a thread to keep record/log the progress on my new Baja.

Just received the Baja today, currently doing a visual inspection, checking all parts look good, nothing is missing, broken.

Placed a Feiyue 1/12 for comparison on top of the box.

** Also ordered an extra set of tires/wheels for the X2.

A few goodies

Took the Baja for a spin, and is it a challenge to drive 2wd, my respects for those who are faithful to 2wd.

It was many times I was sweating begging for clean lines when taking high speed turns, and on the straights.

Took a while and some patience, but once I had the driving dialed it sure was sweet to be able to maintain control. Momentum and throttle are key to driving this beast.

The killer bee is such a peace of mind, no more praying for a divine intervention for no runaways. DDM parts are gold, spur plate, engine braces, clutchbell, definitely can feel the baja more solid and putting the power down to the ground. 30.5cc is way more than enough at this time. The dragon pipe does its job, also got a Dom pipe which later I am gonna test out.

Testing out the Baja taking it easy on the throttle.

All of a sudden, the throttle factory servo stuck open at wot, (and yep at the time had no Killer Bee), straight against a wall.

Luckily one of the dog bones fell off during impact and simply stayed running laying on the grass. Not even a tank of fuel, and already the King Motor servos failed. I know it was "in part" my fault for not having a kill switch. Sent the pictures to KM/Rovanrc, and he looked the other way, not even a new throttle servo, or partial refund to buy a new one. Had to shell out $40.00 on a Hi-Tec high torque metal gear servo, HS-645MG.
No spare front wheel, its out of warranty, I just shelled $500.00 plus 100 more in upgrades and all I got was a out of warranty canned reply email.

Out to online shopping, installed a kill switch, new servo, new wheel, all the upgraded parts from DDM minus the diff case, etc...

Driving in kind of dirt/gravel section, when all of sudden the baja does not want to steer to the right, stays to the left. A small pebble got jammed between the plastic servo horn and this piece, which I have no idea why the F** it is there, stripping the teeth. Number one, WHY? Why cant they shell out 5 more dollars and install a metal horn, and two, that small bump of nylon plastic under the servo, pointless.

Small little details, on the meantime did the roll cage mod, and relocated the on/off switch.

The Baja is back on the workbench. I thought the KM X2 cnc horn fit, but they are different teeth.

For now will do the steering servo angle mod, to improve left turn radius, and possibly the diff case.

Exhibit A, broken gear from KM steering servo. At the beginning I thought the linkage needed shimming, although it did help a bit, sooner than later found the real cause of my servo alignment.

It jammed the servo motor and ended been fried. Sent another email to KM, I know its gonna be another out of warranty canned reply email, but who knows.

So far...
  • bad throttle standard servo
  • broken wheel
  • burned broken large scale servo
  • leak in the tuned pipe, KM sent another one
  • broken plastic steering servohorn (Why? KM, why?, plastic steering horn!!?)
Which I think the crash was a chain reaction for most of the broken parts above.

They are minor problems, nothing compared to the X2.

The Baja is a blast to drive, not recommended for loose gravel, spins out too much. The knobby tires don't help either. Once I get all the kinks, I know it will be cool to drive.

Here you go, from RovanRC;

"Sorry but I can't warranty the servo. Thanks." - [email protected]

A burned up throttle servo not even a full tank (and because of that a runaway ending in a broken wheel), and steering servo, after 3 tanks or so. I even proposed buy a new one at half price etc... nope, just shove it, I mean just buy another one, which I did through EBAY.

No replacement for the servos, wheel, just a nice FU suck it up.

On top of that I bought $100.00 in spare parts when purchasing the Baja.

Lets say I have been CLONED! JA JA JA!

I have read about the end points adjustments, and that was one thing I made sure it was set right.

The throttle servo was set to 60% because I was still in break-in, and the damn thing in barely starting its second tank, just stuck open full throttle.
Not only did it hit a wall, luckily it was on the side, not frontal collision, it also stayed at full throttle, a brand new engine causing premature wear. Who knows how much the engine suffered from it. The seller does not want to help, I am on my own, morale of story, just buy a roller. Out of pocket, had to buy a set of wheels, a Hitec throttle servo, off I go and finishing the second tank, a leak in the pipe because it would not connect well and a broken plastic horn. Back to the bench, buy a cnc horn, back to the bashing ground. Then after another tank, fried steering servo, almost reaching my 4th tank, back to the bench again. One thing, Rovanrc sent me a new pipe, but no wheels, servos, etc.

The funny thing is, a few days after I bought it I had sent RovanRC an email about the throttle servo acting up, and been "glitchy", now he is saying he would have helped me if it was an incident at the beginning, but this an issue a month after the purchase. It is not true, there is email trail to prove the servo was already bad.

So a month into the Baja, and again broke down in the bench. This is the nature of been cloned.

Crank, that's exactly what i'm doing, been collecting the parts to build my car the right way the first time around, getting a km buggy roller next month for my B-day, don't want the hassel of component failure out of the box. Hope you get your buggy sorted out soon.

"Once its run really there is no warranty. If damaged out of the box then thats fine but I can't once its run. Thanks."
- RovanRC / KingMotorsrc salesperson.

That makes no sense...

"I am done helping you with free items and will not sell to you anymore and will report you if you keep cursing.
Thanks" - RovanRc / KingMotors, Dylan.

All I said was, How the F*** will I know, and using the asterisks, not the full context. Thats what I got back.
I never asked for free stuff, broken items out of the box. He falls flat that there is no warranty, which he is wrong, I can open a Paypal claim and return the baja. If thats the case, might as well put a rock in a box and sell as new. Any other company would have responded, I offered to send the items back for inspection.

they should treat the KM and Rovan owners a little better than that, considering all the praise and support they get on this forum. Now I don't know if I should get a buggy from them, what if I run into similar problems, is that how they are going to respond to any claims I might bring up ?, well any way I've been looking at a roller so maybe i'll be relatively safe since all my components that I have acumilated are aftermarket. but still...........

Yep, I also posted youtube videos with links to his site, giving props to his company.

In fact other companies will give you free stuff, and/or special discounts for posting a video, mentioning the company, with guidelines. I mentioned it to Dylan, and was like aha, ok... I never wanted free stuff, I want a buggy that runs, not a buggy that within a week I have to spend 150 dollars more in electronics.

This will be my only and last Baja to buy, and one can find tons of online stores selling HPI Baja and KM X2 parts. Although my interest is shifting into RC boats, I am window shopping for a Miss Geico 29" or somewhere along those lines. Got plenty of cars trucks, never had a RC boat, and here where I live we got tons of nice ponds to drive them. I pass by one, and I just imagine like a little kid, lol, me and my boat.... jaja.

Continuing...

Does anyone know where I can get this adapter for the Baja air filter housing? This model is in an angle and I am tired having to make the filter fit. Dirt gets in the top of the tank, and is difficult to clean with the filter in the middle. By been in an angle will be quick and easy.

elevation%20filter%20rovan%205b_zpsf2r20siw.jpg

I found out why the steering servo possibly burned up.

All parts are King Motor RC brand/ (same as Rovanrc)
Stock steering servo KM
Stock Upgrade chassis brace KM
Stock CNC steering servo horn KM

All parts are for the KM Baja, "FULLY COMPATIBLE", as stated on their website;
"Fits perfectly on the King Motor Servo "
http://www.kingmotorrc.com/steering/aluminum-steering-servo-horn-arm-orange/

"Ready to Bolt Right On!"
"Fits HPI, King Motor and Rovan Baja vehicles.
Will Not Fit T2000"

http://www.kingmotorrc.com/suspension-chassis/front-hd-aluminum-upper-plate-orange/

INCORRECT, FALSE INFORMATION FROM DYLAN, KingmotorRC.
I have to remove significant amount of metal. IT IS NOT A PERFECT FIT, READY, Bolt on...

Talked to Dylan and does not want to honor a new or discounted servo.

On the meantime, applied liquid tape to make the it water resistant (not waterproof) steering servo.

Have you tried mounting the steering servo on the inside of the servo mount to see if it give you more throw and clearance?, just throwing ideas out there, see if it works, it's something i'm going to try when I get my roller. Hope this helps Bro.

well, finally ordered my baja roller, just now, did not want to spend the money for an rtr when i'm going to dump the stock electronics and other parts for all the up grades I've got stashed away, I know it's going to turn out good from the get-go. Just hate painting boddies, going with a solid orange and leave it at that. Hope you get squared away Crank, enjoy reading your post's.

Well, UPS tracking shows delivery for Monday, Can't wait to tear this thing down and build it up with the hop ups I got for it. I have a spare CY23cc for it from my FG sportsline, already broken in and tuned, holly crap ,I forgot about the pipe, slipped my mind, what do you guys suggest for light bashing and maybe some offroad racing ?, and not have to take out a new mortgage on the house? Thanks for any help given.

The cheap clone dominator pipe is better than the dragon pipe.

Dominator pipe is better, and can buy the clone ones for around 35 to 40 dollars.

The Dragonfly is about 25 to 35, and the 360 pipe they are sold for 25 to 30.

Use 20K diff oil, fill it to the cross hairs, and make sure to use locktite (I got a mix bottle with red and blue) on the diff bolts.

Thank you, I finally have my new servo, also bought from DDM the servo arm, angle filter mount (plenum stack) and servo support. Its working all right, the carburetor also went bad, those clone 997 are POS, I bought the cheapest I could find from Aliexpress for 16 dollars and with a cnc intake manifold and a carbon spacer. Ported the intake manifold, and runs much better now, acceleration is crisp and linear.

The new rollers coming out are of very solid construction, prepping is half the fun, wrenching, tweaking them out.

OK Crank, I've been an on road guy all my RC life, so i'm going to go with your suggestion on the Dominator clone, I also ordered an extra diff, just in case, going to fill that with 10k. also got coming a GPM alum diff case, OK? to get rid of the stock plastic case. Are the stock bones ok or do I have to upgrade there also? One more ?, can the shocks be filled from the top or have to do it from the bottoms? Glad to hear you got your ride going and pretty much satisfied with it.
