I believe I pulled some dirt into my motor (stock Losi). Dirt definitely got past the air filter because it got tangled when I screwed airbox together, creating a gap. The car is making a squealing noise, only when throttle opened up. Now it won't start.

1. How can I find out if dirt made it inside the motor?
2. Can a dirty motor be fixed?
3. Do full shrouds prevent this? Outerwears? Which ones?

My bash area has very fine dirt/dust.

Thanks for help, friends!

Steve

Take the motor apart and inspect for damage.
If it is damaged you can probably rebuild it.
If needed, the link to instructions on how to do it is below (Team Fast Eddy Tutorials).

If you have damage inside from sand you will most likely have to change piston+ring and the cylinder. A prefilter bag might help a little but make sure the air filter is correctly mounted and oiled, there really should not be anything entering the engine that can cause any damage.

Waiting for parts like a piston stop, flywheel puller, and rebuild kit for the CY. I plan to rebuild it and get it working again, however I've also ordered an OBR 7.5 hp + pipe. I'll get the CY working (hopefully) then store it as a backup motor or maybe use it with a roller later on.

It could be totally bad luck + I'm a newbie, but I've had bad luck with CY engines. Losi failed within 1 tank of gas (probably largely my fault, but still) and my KM Baja clone came with a CY that lasted about a week. I replaced the CY in the clone with a 290RC Zenoah from DDM and it's been rock solid ever since -- tons of bashing in mud and dirt and that engine just fires right up every time.

I know lots of people have a totally different experience and get great reliability from CY engines. Not me though.

I don't buy nothing cy anymore myself. Its all zenoah for me. Cy never was good for me either. I had a zenoah g290 in my baja and it lasted about 5 years of brutal bashing. All i buy now is obr/zenoah. Even my 30.5 race port obr is on its 5th year and still running strong.

Hehe my old zenoah 26cc in my MT is 12 years old now and still going strong. Only changed piston and ring 5 years ago now. :)
That doesn't surprise me. For the first month or so in this hobby I really struggled with the CY motors. Since putting the Zenoah in my KM clone I'm always slightly amazed that it fires right up every time -- got so used to CYs getting easily flooded, refusing to run smoothly, etc.

My OBR motor + pipe should be here next week for the 5T.

Sean at OBR confirmed my motor (7.5 hp) and Victory pipe will be Fed-Ex'd this week.

After working on a KM Baja clone for the past couple months, I was pretty impressed how easy the Losi is to work on. Removing the motor took literally 60 seconds! Compare to probably 30 minutes with the Baja design. I like both though -- the Baja somehow feels more like a real desert racing vehicle in the way it's constructed. The Losi is just awesome in general :) (dead CY motor notwithstanding).

Also just found out the R/C track near me allows gas vehicles after all -- except during baseball games in the neighboring park. It's a 1/8th truggy track, but I think that should be OK for some informal 5T lapping, huh? I'm not ready for any actual racing -- just started the hobby this year.
