looking for a good 5th scale truck or buggy to go racing any suggestions out there for an experienced racer

I am partial to the Losi 5ive T and B. Great platform to race and or bash. Holds up to many practice laps and abuse these things take. Bodies are expensive, but consider them expendable any way. I had an unfavourable experience with 2 different HPI models and never really enjoyed 2 wheel drive. My .02

I'm w/Revo on this..partial to the Losi's.

Where are you located?
Did you want 2wd or 4wd?

On the U.S. side of the world, the Losi 5ive T or 5ive B seem to be the vehicle of choice.

On the other side of the world..over in Europe...I think they might run more of the MCD vehicles.

Parts availability should be another consideration. Nothing is gonna be worse than having to wait 2 or 3 weeks for an out of stock part.

The Losi vehicles, you can find parts for pretty much anywhere on line..including hop-ups if you want...your LHS might have them in stock too.
MCD, I think the only place in the U.S. you can get them is at largescalerc.com

I suggest going to whatever track you plan on racing at and see what everybody else is running and pick that....(Losi in the U.S.).

thank you yes looks like the 5ive t or b of choice

Losi 5T+B are hard to go wrong with, 5B in particular. It just handles so well you almost feel like you are cheating. FG have a bunch of really great machines to their name for racing, their Leopard Buggy is very popular in Europe, however their racing stock is expensive. Elcon have some truly amazing buggies but a roller cost as much (a lot more) as a fully setup Losi. Edit: Forgot about Hörmann. Great buggies.

There is also MCD but those are not beginners cars. Also, they are expensive.

If you really want something that will hold up get a Kracken Levi Shirley edition its a kit and you can build it your way. This will enable you to purchase the good equipment from the start and build it your way. Instead of getting a HPI,LOSI OR A CLONE that's already together and purchase the upgrade parts. This is equivalent to buy the same part twice with better quality, cause you know it will break and you will up grade it anyway its just a matter of when, and to build a car is pretty cool and you know every aspect of it cause you built it and know what its capable performance will be. Just take your time and enjoy it.Its all about bigger, better and faster than the other guy. LOL Hoped this helped good luck

I would also like to know who actually races a Vekta 5 and take home wins? Don't get me wrong I would love one as a basher, but as a racing truck? It seems to be all over the place. If you are going to recommend something exotic with a so far almost untested back axle setup why not the fid - Dragonhammer. It is pretty much hop'ed up to the gills from the get go. Most of it is alloys out of the box. It seems well build and wisely they made the back axle out of plastic so its cheap to replace as its going to take some serious beating and forces tearing at it.

It's not. In races under the various racing associations the engine size limit is 23cc tuned up or 26cc stock. It is all about control, 'nimble' takes the cake on most days.

There is a reason that the most popular buggies over here are the Germans/Dutch, they don't look like much but that doesn't matter because figuratively all you are going to see is their backside when you can catch a glimspe through the dust.

The 5ive B is a kit and you don't really NEED to upgrade the 5ive T. It's a pretty solid truck out of the box.

I would say like this.
FG buggys, simple to work on (though they are tightly built) and they are really light.
Losi 5b & 5t, wonderful offroad handling, spacious and easy to work on, on the heavy side (esp. the 5ive-T with stock body)
MCD, Also wonderful off-road handling, advanced truck with loads of tweaking to be done. Though they seem rather prone for random breakdowns every now and then. Also pretty expensive and does have some overheating issues in hotter climates from what I have seen.
Elcon and hörman I have not seen personally, probably due to their price.

And I do not wanna bash the Kracken or anything but please do remember that fixed axle trucks are a thing of the past. There is a reason you don't see anything with a fixed axle in the big racing world (with exception for hill climbers). I can't think of any reason why one would want to have it? I think the Kracken looks appealing to some because it is different and looks like its a new thing (when it is really the opposite...)
As a basher it might be awesome?
