So I bought a brand new pullstart for this used baja 5b I have. I haven’t ever ran it before so I have no idea what’s wrong with it if anything.

But here’s what happened:
-started pretty easy, and ran for a couple seconds at idle and then stalled. Fine

-tried to restart it but after a couple pulls the pull start got jammed with the string pulled all the way out, once loosening the pullstart off of the motor, it automatically retracted.

-tried to start again and got it running, but after like 2 seconds of idle, pull start seemed to “explode” even though string was fully retracted and engine was running.

-pulled the pullstart off to find the string got sucked into the “flywheel?” And I’m assuming that’s what stalled the engine. Also the pullstart spring was all uncoiled under the pullstart.

-so I’ve recoiled the spring and put it all back together. But haven’t ran it again yet.

Any idea what happened and why? I’d like to understand what went wrong here so I don’t do it again.

for the ps spring to come out then the screw musta came out from the middle of the paw bit...(y).I always chk these to make sure there tight before i fit it(y)....never heard of the string being sucked into the fan though

Okay. I have a feeling it was too loose maybe. I didn’t mess with it after it got shipped to me. I should have checked. But I’ll try it again with the screw as tight as it goes. Seems to still be recoiling properly.

How many times do you tension the spring? I did it twice and feel like that should be sufficient.

Oh man. So I had my pullstart all set up properly and then tried it again. After a couple pulls the Center screw came lose and the whole thing exploded in there again. What’s the deal!?!

No I’m in Canada. I’d love to go to a store and buy one but it seems like hpi is out of business or something. No one carries anything. So my best bet is online. eBay, Amazon. That kinda thing.

The pull start works for a decent amount of pulls, and if I wanted to I could just put the new pawl into the old casing and washers and stuff, so not too big of an issue. My main issue right now is the fact that it’s not starting (as per my other thread) and like I said I can’t get parts quick, so I ordered a spark plug off eBay, not knowing if the spark I’m seeing is strong enough or not.
