Sounds a stupid question but for those with 8-shock MT's, which oil are you using.
I bought 8 alloy shocks BEFORE I bought the truck 5 months ago, and was told the oil / spring set-up was right.
Springs are quite soft, but it always seems too springy - oil level's fine whenever I've tested that, so there's no leaks anywhere.

Oil he's put in (seller of shocks) was FG 700.
I've got the preloads on low load - high up - to limit the 'springiness' but I think I can stop a LOT of my tumbles by increasing the oil viscosity.
I'm looking at possibly going as high as 2000.
What do you guys use?
Alan.

If the springs are soft then it will play a part in the bounciness. You could put thicker oil and it will help. Usually you want to put thinner oil in the back than in the front. I like mine to be 40wt in the front and 20-30wt in the back.

Hi Chris,
Thanks.
Don't want to tighten up the pre-tension or it will be too springy.
From experience with my LST2, it's (apparently) obvious the oil's too thin. It needs more damping.
How does 40wt relate to the FG 700? Is it 'FG 4000' for example?
I see what you mean loading the front more than the back.
Thanks,
Alan.

Thanks guys.
I believe you've answered my suspicion that the oil in mine is way too thin.
Can anyone relate the FG numbers to 'wt', as the rest of the world use, eg 1000 FG = ?? wt ? :helpsmilie:

I'M GUESSING that FG 2000 = Associated 20 000 weight (approx), for example.

This means I should have solved why my truck's so damned 'bouncy'.

I was given a huge choice of springs, and the ones on it are the weakest, but it's obviously over-sprung, meaning the oil's doing stuff all!!

Thanks for all of your comments.

I think I'll give FG 4000 a go all round - compromise between BtB and Super's recommendations. I'll 'crank up' the springing a bit to compensate for the much stiffer damping also.
Alan.

BtB, do you mean that the stock oil in the 4-shock 4x4 was FG 20,000?
On the basis that 'it was obviously thicker than 60 weight' and the idea of dropping a '0' somewhere, this would agree, indicating this is the equivalent of 200 weight.
What do you reckon? I think it makes sense, somehow!!
Alan.

Boy, I can't remember what they told me years ago when i asked FG. I want to say it was 20,000. The thickness is much thicker. I bet your right on dropping the 0 and making it 2000. That would make sense. I do remember the weight was calculated differently from there to here.
I just used the Associated silicone 50 and 60 weights and experimented. There 3.00 a bottle and a bottle/bottle and a half will do 4 shocks from what I remember. There is a big difference with different oil weights, thats for sure.
