For the past 20 years you've only ever seen adds for rb innovations from rb innovations and never heard of anyone using one. Ah, well thats a lie. There were some nitro guys that tried them years ago, and ended up taking them off ad the engines were impossible to keep tuned.

It's not a lie that I haven't heard of or seen anyone try one.

Turboing a 40 hp mercury outboard was possibly the easiest project I have ever done. The engine made 40 hp with a very wide power band in stock form. There were two turbos to choose from 500 cc and 700 cc. Although the engine was 720 cc I went with the 500 cc model because a 500 cc snowmobile develops much more hp than my pitiful 720 cc 40 hp. I simply made a plate that covered the exhasust outlet, mounted a turbo, put a carb on the inlet side and plumbed the outlet side back into the original carb location. Instant 85 hp with boost starting quickly at low rpm and quickly building through the hp/torque curve. The guy I raced against had a larger displacement engine that made 62 hp against my stock 40 hp and he was running nitrous. From a 40 mph 'float' he wouldn't get a full boat length (12 feet) before I started coming back. My former stock engine made 40 hp and was good for 80 mph on a good day. With the turbo, I would ease back on the throttle at 105 mph due to handling issues. I'll have to take this up tomorrow due to barely being able to hold my eyes open.

I guess I should mention, the other hydro guy I raced against had 62 hp BEFORE adding nitrous. The nozzles and jets he used came in three sizes, the largest claiming a 50 hp increase. My completely unmodified 40 hp (44 cu in) witrh the turbo at 18 lbs of boost had at least 15 mph top speed over him. The downside was very short reed life.
