So I got my brand new rear exhaust pipe from Jetpro today. Took the stock pipe off which took all of about two seconds, and then went to put on the JetPro pipe.

There are two screws that you have to screw to the engine head. I screw the one on the right no problem. The one on the left, would allow me to get the screw about 25% of the way in and then nothing, so I back out the screw thinking maybe the screw may have gotten stripped some how (I found like 3 screws on the chassis that were stripped from factory, so thought this was the case). I wanted to make sure it wasn't the screw, so I tried switching screws (being the screw on the right hand side went in no problem). Once again, even though I swapped screw, the screw on the right went in, and the one on the left didnt.

Jetpro sent me screws as well (just like the stock ones on our Red Cats), so I figured I'd give them a try. Once again the screw on the right went in no problem, the one on the left gets stuck again, only this time, the housing that the screw goes into breaks right down the middle!!! Now I can't screw my brand new pipe in!!!

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm really getting frustrated with this thing. Not only am I out the $$$ for the kit, I upgraded the servos (which was almost a $200 upgrade), and now this happens!!

Please tell me this is covered under warranty?!?!?!

I called and emailed Redcat, but looking for some input from you all. Please let me know.

Did you have loctite or silicone in the hole, because too much can cause a bolt hole to split because there is nowhere for it to go, and its just like bottoming out the bolt. I did it once with a cummins cylinder head there was some silicone down in the hole and when i torqued the head down it broke the ear off the head.

redcat was pretty good about warrantying broken parts for me.(steering srevos, and front knuckles) that i had out of the box problems with. but i don't know if they are going to do anything for you on a motor,or head. esp if its been used. i know what your goin thru though its frustrating to be where your at right now. i think everyone on this forum has been there at some point. good news is that head kits are pretty cheap i think ddm sells a big bore kit for around $20.

@fat - same amount of loctite on both screws, so that's not the problem.

@pete - can you post a link for the head kit? I'm on the site and not sure which one would fit. Thanks in advance.

Thanks trickle, that's a bit steep - the $20 sounded nice. LOL. I have exhausted my $$$$ for RC for the month.

Redcat is sending me a new one. Must say I was pleasantly surprised as to how well they handled the issue

what are they sending you, because i am now having the same problem

my right exhaust bolt will not tighten. don't know why, but its not. just keeps spinning but cant get it tight

Redcat made good

Got my new head from Redcat - can't say enough about their customer service

test first

try putting the bolts in the head without the pipe on to test the threads. If they work without the pipe on, but don't work with the pipe on then the holes in the pipe flange are not spaced correctly. you may be able to fix it by opening up the hole in the pipe flange a little with drill or better yet a drimel tool.

here's a tip for using a jetpro, when you put the screws in put them both in at same time, turn one a little then turn the other i know it's a pita, but it works so you won't strip the holes, wiped out mine twice so i finally modified the pipe and went to the hollow point stud kit and ended all my issues.

5mm helicoil works when that happens. The alternative is to use a torch and brazing rod to fill the hole, redrill, and retap it.

just go to home depot and buy some long 5mm grub screws, nuts, and washers for $2. high temp thread lock the grub screws into the head and you got yourself some grade 8 studs

------------

I know this is an old thread, but I had a similar problem with a new Rampage MT V3, with HY 30 cc engine and this might help others in the same situation. Long story short, they only threaded the exhaust holes 5mm deep instead of all the way through, which means the bolts stop short. Standard exhaust bolts are 5M x 15 range, so you either have to re-tap the exhaust holes out which is a quick fix if you purchase a 5$ Tap handle and a 5MM x .8 Pitch tap which should set you back 10$ total. The other option is to order off the net some 5M x 8m bolts. I was not happy with the bolt quality I was seeing listed in this size range, so I would suggest going with a Tap. Good luck!

Thanks,

Mike
