is this an mcd or rampage drive shaft???

That shaft is a MCD shaft it was installed on a Redcat Rampage, they are exactly the same length.

Why would the shaft be put together in a spiral like that?

It isn't that is just the way the outer coating cracked. Mine looked the same, the ones I have broken.

There are new drive shafts coming out from mcd made from tool material that wont snap, they are already fitted to the new competition cars just released, i would suggest replacing it with one of the new style drive shafts, i have not had a problem with mine and i have been testing them for over 3 months now
