So recently picked up a losi DBXL-E off Facebook marketplace. Scored it for £500 which i didn't think was bad.
It's going to be my next project. I've already done a few, XRT and Xmaxx to name a couple.
The car came with an XLX2 ESC and 1100kv castle motor. I've never had anything castle related before I've been purely Hobbywing. I just find the castle stuff a bit messy, the wiring etc is all over the place. Could be the previous owners build but it just seems excessive compared to the HW setups which is quite neat.
I have already done an Xmaxx with a Max4 560kv running on 12s...yee haw it's quick. So just wanted to know if I should do the same to the dbxle or go with the max5 800kv.
I know there are mixed options etc as the new max5 can do 12s on 800kv motors.
I love the size and power of the max4 however it is large, but would look awesome poking through the driver cabin.
Would the max4 have any stability altering affects compared with a max5? The Xmaxx certainly does as it sits a lot higher in the chassis.
What are you fine max4 users running gearing wise on the dbxle.
Treat me gently, I'm here.

Max5 800kv here. I have had it cut a little on 12s, but that could have been down to fan issues I had that day. I've added a cap pack to it next time out and we will see what it does. The Max5 is basically the smallest 12s esc though, so if youve room to fit it, why not go bigger? I got my setup as a budget option at the time, I will probbably upgrade it later on down the line when i'm sure something is causing a problem. Until then I'll keep checking temps and pushing it till it cuts or soething goes pop. If your in the market for a Max4 you might also want to check out MADMAX esc's. They are very Hobbywing in their design but seem to offer a higher amp ceiling for similar comparable esc's.

I'm running a Max 5 with a castle 1100kv on 10s

I've seen enough max 4s blow up to never own one. I'd buy a madmax20/21 before a max 4.

The max 5 is definitely more limited/locked down which works in it's favor for longevity. With the stock fan and 50/18 gearing it would overheat and overcurrent limit with the hobby wing 1100kv on 10s (not recommend). Installed a server fan, the castle motor, and did some programming. Now she pulls as many amps as my battery pack will provide. Lipo temps are normally around 110°F, motor and ESC run at about 160°F; in grass with 186mm spikes.

I have the new Max5 with 650kv set up. It's pairs nicely on 12s and a 25t pinion. It stays cool and runs all day. It won't get 60 plus mph like a 800kv, but it will handle more heat and deliver a more responsive mid range power.

If it already came with a XLX2/1100kv, why not just use that and clean up the wiring? Other than the crappy on/off switch and some long wires, that setup is really solid. The Castle ESC tuning options are really nice.

But I have 3 Max4 ESCs and have had zero issues. They are a solid 12S esc. I also have a MadMax 20 and 21. Those have been aces so far and I love the built-in bluetooth; it makes config on the fly so easy. But those are really high amp ESCs, so unless you're heavy or running torque monster motors, you could get away with the MadMax 15 or MadMax 12 (equivalent to the Max5)
