what is that black plastic piece with the holes in it and how does it do anything?
MCD racing has no information about it.

Looks to me like you pick the gear ratio from the chart on the chassis and then pick whatever hole on that black "jig-a-ma-thing" goes with the gears you are running to set gear mesh.

It is imposable for that to set "gear ratio" as it says. You obviously need a different tooth count to do that and that plastic thing has nothing to do with the actual ratio.

The chassis gear mesh and upper center diff gear mesh work together to give you the proper mesh. You add the pinion and spur together to set both. An example is 23t pinion and 62t spur equals 85 when added together. Set both upper and lower chassis to 85 then put the screw in that corresponding hole and screw down. Very easy.

I'm still confused how it does anything, my rr5 didn't come with it and the mesh seems o.k

Ahhh. I got it. Thanks.

It should have come with it. Each movement of the chassis and center diff gear mesh mounts moves the engine plate closer or further away from the spur gear.
i bet it's not needed and a correct mesh can still be made with out it.
i bought it used and just dismantled it the centre diff was low on grease it's a good thing i did check it and it's got a diff locker in the back it's looking better now and nearly finished.

the previous owner had a mishap with the bracket and the bearing edge but the pinion is near new.

Have eliminated any gear mesh pins, devices, what not on all my rc's....not reliable with production products. Have always done it by ear and eyes.....just the tiny little tick sound. Have used the paper trick before but with it or my tick sounds always check in a couple different spots. Why can't I ever find good deals on used rc's?????
