Hi all,

I am building an FG marder as a little project as i really like the look of them and how they drive etc.

Iv got quite a few parts so far as i have a hobbypro monster truck with loads of alloy upgrades so all the parts seem to fit the marder chassis with no problem.

However i am a little confused with the front bulkhead situation!! The stock marder bulkheads have the holes for the wishbone pins at the same height (on the A and the B bulkhead) however I have been looking at alloy bulkheads on ebay and I have noticed some bulkhead sets with the A and the B bulkhead having the wishbone pins at different heights???

My current alloy bulkheads from my monster truck also has the wishbone pin holes at different heights, does the marder NEED to have the wishbone pin hols at the same height as it is on the stock bulkheads?

I have had so much trouble with my truck rolling on corners, so i don't want my marder rolling on corners too!

Will the height of the wishbone pin holes have any effect on the handling of my marder?

Do i keep my existing alloy bulkheads with different height pin holes or go for the same height pin holes?

any suggestions please??

cheers

with fg, the on road bulkhead is taller in front to get the kick up. they also have a slight slant on the bottom. there is also a plastic wedge that was used on the sport models with the 2 same height bulkheads. the off road chassis has a kick up so they use 2 of the same height bulheads. the fg clones basically use an on road bulkhead on the off road chassis.

more kick up.
more weight transfer to the front of the chassis off throttle or under braking
chassis compresses or drops more off throttle or under braking
handling is improved on bumpy tracks
decreased steering response

less kick up
less weight transfer
chassis drops less
smooth track handling
increased steering response

thanks for your reply! Very helpfull!

So for the best performance from my marder should i be using the same height bulkheads? I do have the stock bulkheads that are the same height! BUT only in plastic!!!

Also does it matter how i have the front shock towers set up? for example the marder uses only ONE shock tower for the shocks to connect to BUT i have got two shock towers which sit on top of the bulkheads and a rod fits between the two shock towers which the shocks connect to. (i think this is how the FG monster truck is set up. Is this a good idea for the marder or not?

thanks!

the dual tower setup is stronger I'd say. and with the alloy setup you'd have decreased steering response but better handling in the rough. it depends what you are doing... you'll probably notice the pins are longer than you need. and the wire between the tower is a tad too long. on the clones they used the spacing between the bulkheads (chassis mounting) the same as on road as well. I did the same thing. put a clone front end on my marder chassis and just used spacers on the pins

it doesn't take much to swap around the front ends so you should try both and see what you like. if you notice no difference then you won't need to buy different alloy bulkheads. to be honest, most people don't notice the subtle differences in these setup changes unless hard core racers. us average bashers will think it feels much the same. I experimented swapping parts around between all the models and some cases just used what I had. I mix and match brands, well my semi is all fg, but the vw is a hybrid.

and the info I gave about setup I copied from my favourite free online download about suspension tuning. go to rcdocuments.com (team fast eddy runs the site btw) and download the xray xb8 manual. the last few pages shows setup info. best part is it shows if you change this, it will affect this, and it covers pretty well every possible adjustment you can make on a car.
sounds like you have some tinkering. best part is you have options to play with. just toss it together, drive it and next clean up, swap the bulkheads and drive it that way.

i will give the dual shock mount setup a try then! You were right the rods were slightly too long but iv chopped them back slightly and they now fit!

What could have been causing my clone (hobbypro monster truck) to roll when it enters / leaves a corner? Would it have been the rubbish shocks or the height of the bulkheads? or the dodgy square shape chassis?

Im just worried that if i use the same bulkheads from my clone on the marder it will casue it to roll just like the clone did!!

Iv got a baja 5b and that sticks to the ground like snow!!!

Do shocks have a big impact on the way a 1/5th scales can enter corners?

a lot of that will be side bite. what tires did you have? you were more than likely traction rolling. what was the ride height. width of the vehicle.

to be honest the ride height wasnt too high, not sure of the exact height.

The tyres were quite wide but didnt have any nobbles on them, very soft rubber with little tred really.

The truck wasnt really that wide to say it was a truck, maybe similar width to the marder only the chassis was squared instead of triangular like the marder, could this have anything to do with it rolling.

This is the main reason iv scrapped it and built a marder!!

Im just forward thinking as i really DO NOT want the marder rolling like the clone truck did!

Do you have any pics? My buddy has a FG MT
and want to change it to a Baja / Stadium Truck.
He has some parts to start with....needs an
idea of what bulkheads with what shocks
to determine ride height etc.
