hi guys :)

picked up a new piston ring in the week, gunna fit it this weekend, never done one before & ive had my beetle 6+ years!

Anyway ...any tips for fitting it & what i should look out for? The only thing ive ever done was fit a new head gasket & that was about 3 weeks after i got my beetle as my head gasket had blew!

Ive also got a new copper head gasket to fit at the same time, but ive also got a spare standard head gasket, is the copper one the best to use?

Ta guys :)

when you get the cylinder off. take a good look at the walls, and piston. look for deep scratches/gouges. things should be smooth and shiney. I would take a green scotchbrite pad, and scrup the cylinder using small circular patterns.
do the same with the piston.

gently grab the the open ends of the ring, pull gently and lift up and over the piston. then just workthe ring out. make sure the ring groove in the piston is clean form build up ect. then GENTLY work the new ring on. i usually lay the ring over the piston. and gently pull the ends open, while pushing the ring down on the piston. work the ring down into the piston groove. just don't try to open the ring any farther than needed to get it over the top edge of the piston.
once its on and in the ring groove. make sure the open gap is around the retianing pin located in the ring groove, which will be facing the carb intake side. toss on some 2 stroke oil on the piston/ring/cylinder, put on a new cylinder gasket, and re assemble.

If the motor is that old I would recommend doing a full overhaul. Start out by removing the top end and inspecting it like said above.
If all looks good then split the lower end and replace the oil seals and crank bearings. Here are two some to choose from:

I usually will buy the gasket set, here is the two bolt one:

Inspect the pin bearing and crank bearings. Make sure they look in tact and replace the pin bearing if worn or the crank if the bearing looks worn on that.

Its up to you but a worn oil seal or worn crank bearing can be worse then a bad piston ring.

Good luck on your build. There are videos of rebuilds if you need them.

Its easy enough Daz, stick with the standard paper gasket as i've heard the copper gaskets are harder to do right, think you have to heat them up before fitting and the squish will be bigger than if you used the standard 1..

oki ta for info guys :)

although my beetle is 6 years old, it not had alot of use, at times its been parked up for months at a time! but been meaning to do a piston ring change for a while so gunna do it tmrw :)
