Switch out reciever from a working car don't switch crystals and go from there.

had a similar experience with an older futaba 1024 pcm radio system and it was working fine but then just up and died. turned out to be a bad set of crystals however if i understand your issues i don't think this is your culprit. ok now for a strange question to see if we can help you.

are BOTH of your radios 27 MHz and are they both am or fm (example both radio systems 27mhz am or both 27 mhz fm)?

if you check and find the crystals are good, both are on the same band (27 Mhz am/am (or fm/fm). the next thing i would check would be for a wiring issue which i am assuming if the problem is the wiring it would be in the on off switch (easy to test just plug rx pack directly into the receiver).
