made a brushless losi 5ive and used the castle xl2 esc 2028 motor cap pack and external bec, running on two 4s 6500mah 150c maxamps lipos for 8s, and the xl2 caught on fire within a minute,

should i try again with another xl2 or get the mgm? castle said it will burn up again because its not made for the 4wd, it was made for the baja....

anyone run the xl2 castle setup in there losi 5ive on 8s and have it last?
thanks for the help

i got the v2 conversion ddm top plate, turtle chassis braces and team chase steering brace, 5imain rims with silverback beadlocks with mickey thompson tires, darksoul extenders, modified center diff mount, monster center diff lock, custom red and black body and IRP turnbuckles and camber links, red aluminum a arms, and 14.5lb springs in front and 11lbs springs in the rear

I'm staying gas. However, Joe Ford @ Castlecreations might be able to elaborate on their Baja 5B only stance for the 2028/XL2 combo. He has been fantastic at helping me with other conversions. Have you by chance run your setup by the guys @ RC-monster.com? It sounds like a gearing issue to me and startup torque may have doomed your first XL2, as I have seen others pull it off reliably. The MGM 128 bit ESC is now available waterproof, and seems the obvious choice, but the price sure is steep.
With the Losi, the weight and drivetrain drag vs. 2wd Baja should require a much lower gear ratio and lower top end. I don't think the pinion in most conversions would account for that. I thought a 9-10 tooth pinion would be a good starting point and most I have seen are in the 12t to 15t range which is asking a lot from a 780KV motor. There were some XL2's that went out early without sufficient R&D for use in the aftermarket which your case applied at the time. I would make nice with Castle and become a beta tester. They may well value your input.

ya it seems to be a great setup for my baja, i got a brushless baja with castle setup converted toa 5t with kraken cage, im thinking about trading it for a mgm esc

Can you provide a link to this 128 bit ESC? Searched the site and found nothing. The TMM 40063-3 X2 Series PRO is their top dollar ESC and is a 32 bit system. It looks like many of their ESCs are available fully waterproofed as an extra option when you click the "configure" button located just under the "buy" option. Full waterproofing is a 49.95 EUR option while water resistant option is only 8.95 EUR. Almost a 900 EUR ESC. I am planning on ordering this ESC for my build that is underway, and pairing it with the Lehner 3080 6 or 7 turn motor. I'm actually at the stage where I'm ready to order. I have non X2 series 40063-3s in my brushless 5ive that I purchased not too long ago. It is paired with a custom built 850kv 2028 and I'm running a 16T pinion. I've only run on 12s, and it is awesome.

I've had Castle replace 2 XL2's for my 1/8 MT installations ...
I run 6S, and the heaviest, an alloy, carbon, titanium LST2 with roll cage weighs 9.5 kg all up.
Heavy for 1/8 but a lightweight cf Largescale.
I even had Castle calling me up and telling me its over-geared!!
Probably is if I used a MMM, that's why I'm using an XL2, with a 1717.
I suspect the previous 4082 2000 kV motor I had in, before I geared up and installed the 1650 kV 1717.
It seems OK now, but with that power, I should be able to expect to go faster than it did on nitro. It does, but will top out at perhaps 50-55 mph.

I don't think that's humongously overgeared!!

Al.

I just finished configuring my MGM TMM 40063-3 X2 Series PRO and the Lehner 3080! Time to click "buy"!!!

I use the Castle XL-2 with caps added to get great performance from the XL-2
The trick is the motor choice. I bought the Beast X524 2Y 910kv motor and it is made for 8s! Also the Lipos are very important. Use only SMC race formula 6500 4s in series and you will have enough power to run any esc and not have amp draw issues they are Matched cells and ar rated at 70-140c discharge. This is very important! Go to the SMC web site and you will fall over from sticker shock!!!

Oh ya! You should use nothing smaller than 6mm connectors with your lipos or your motor and esc connections. The esc comes with 8mm and you should use them.
Remeber this also. The 4X4 you see in this video is not a Losi 5ive! It is custom made and has much less resistance in it's drivetrain. I do not know how this set up runs in a losi. I run a Gizmomotor 30.5 full mod in my 5T.

All depends on the weight and type of driving. Losi 5ives are near bulletproof so people drive them so (well at least I do) my setup with a lighter body and not to terrible driving caught flames after a little while and only weighed in at 34lbs that's low for a 5ive. I think cc just dropped the ball on the cap side of the esc, i've used other 5th scale esc and they don't have issues with ripple and whatnot because the circuitry is up for the task even with the same amount of caps stock no need for cap packs and sadly my fire started regardless of the installed cap pack. End of the day xl2 is not a reliable 4x4 5th scale esc 2wd awesome but anything beyond not so much this is coming from someone with two xl2 esc collecting dust on the bench cause I have no use for them now

Thats sad to hear. I also run one in my XBE on 8s with the Castle 1717 motor. Runs like a raped ape on 8s! And yes I know 6s is recomended for the 1717 motor.
