Hello everyone. First time poster. I have been into many, many things RC ever since I can remember as a little kid. I've done almost everything. Cars, boats, planes, helis, drones, you name it.
I'm looking to get my first 1/5 scale RC and I have a few questions. I've done a TON of research and reading over the last few days, and these are the questions I couldn't really find answers to. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Expected usage for this RC will only be on sand at the beach, in the dunes. No racing, no streets, nothing else. This will be a dedicated dune basher, that's it.
I've looked at everything out there. The main the important things for me (in order) are durability, reliability, and parts availability.
Yes, I know to get a kill switch before I even turn it on for the first time.
Questions:
1) 2WD vs 4WD - Which is better, does it matter? Is 4WD super important for dunes?
2) Gas vs Electric - I've always had electric stuff in the past, but a friend tells me that gas is better for 1/5 scale and I'm inclined to agree in this situation. The pull start weed whacker motors seem pretty reliable and easy to fix/replace. Is not having reverse on a gasser a problem?
3) Heavy vs Light - Lighter cars go faster and potentially take less damage when crashed. Heavier cars are slower and built for more abuse. Is a heavy car in the sand a bad idea, even with 4WD?
4) Vehicle style - Truck vs Buggy. Is this purely cosmetic? Do they behave the same when driven? It seems to me that buggy would be better for sand because it's less body to remove/clean/break/fix. Any issues with truck bodies limiting suspension travel?
5) I'm considering vehicles like the Baja 5B, Losi 5ive, Losi Desert Buggy XL and Redcat Rampage Xb/Dunerunner. Does one of these vehicles stand out as far superior for my dune bashing application? Can one be eliminated as a bad idea? I realize that these are vastly different vehicles.
That's all the questions I can think of for now. I'm sure there will be more.
