Hi all

Just picked up an HPI Baja 5b from a seller to towns over.

Car seems to be in very good shape and even has some mods to it already

I haven't had a chance to drive it yet because I have to buy a radio for it because set my radio down on the back of my truck and not thinking about it I drove off and it fell out and who knows where it is...

Anyways, while I'm debating about what radio to get I had a few questions

1) what's a good radio to get? I'm assuming 2.4 gigahertz seems like the new Norm .... This car is new to me and I used to be into RC when it was nicads and non 2.4 GHz radios!

2) a lot of videos I've watched with the higher powered engines the front end tends to lift a lot .... I'm planning on buying a front chassis brace to help protect my frame from bending in case I land hard or worse yet crash ... I was debating between buying a lightweight aluminum one or a heavy stainless steel one ...
I can see pros and cons to each and I'm wondering what the best weight is to add to the front the aluminum one which I would imagine doesn't weigh a lot or I read that there's a steel one available that weighs a whopping 14 oz ...

I know trying to keep the car light is probably best for acceleration and overall handling however if the car always wheelies and your front end is off the ground I'm guessing it would be a good idea to try to add a little bit of weight to keep the front end down?

2) are two speed transmissions worthwhile? I've even seen a GTB 3-speed transmission I can't say I've seen too many videos with the three speed ... Is the more speeds the merrier?

3) I'm thinking I'm going to go with mechanical front brakes also ... Seems like that would help a lot performance wise stopping something so heavy and or slowing down quickly enough to enter turns Etc .... I thought about going hydraulic but then again I saw that a lot of people are saying the cheap kids have Master cylinders that leak so I'm not trying to get into all that

Anybody have recommendations as to which kit to buy? I'm looking at the mechanical kit that goes for about 75 bucks I think it's GTB brand maybe but it's on Amazon

Anyways I'm looking forward to getting my car back to running
... It does have the upgraded 30.5 cc engine and runed pipe already

Oh lastly is there any need in particular to upgrade anything to aluminum? I'm thinking I'll stay stock until things break or maybe I should be preventive medicine getting some aluminum parts

I think the previous owner mentioned something about he swapped out the dog bones or with the CV axle so that you can replace the pins without having to buy the entire assembly so I guess that's a plus already

Anyways thanks for any and all help and opinions and comments

Andrew

Welcome! I used to have a baja 5b many many years ago. Not sure where it went but recently built a new HPI Baja 5B SBK kit.

I use a Futaba 10Px radio but any radio will do. Futaba is a good brand but there are others. Just make sure you have failsafe and a kill switch for your engine.

I run a Taylor 35cc in mine. Haven't finished breaking it in yet though.

As far as transmissions, I know Taylor RC and Detroit Performance sell a 2 speed for it by Blackbone that is reliable. I have one of these but haven't installed it yet. Want to drive it a little like this and break the engine in first. I haven't upgraded anything to aluminum yet its all stock.

As far as the brakes go, these are one of the best ones: https://www.ddmracing.com/RCR-Brake-Upgrade-Kit-for-HPI-Baja-5B-5T-5SC-RCR002

With the RCR brakes, you won't even need front brakes. I have these on mine and they stop amazingly. Just put a powerful brake servo on it with these and you'll be fine.

as above fella, RCR brakes are the way to go, they will work much better than mechanical or hydro brakes on the front,
two speeds aint the best for bashing/off road use, they tend to end up going wrong/jamming up quite a bit,
if yours still has the plastic tranny case then change that to an alloy one at some point, the stock plastic case will fail at some point, usually at the front of the case just above the screw mounts,
chassis brace at the front go with an i-rc alloy one, a steel brace will be way too heavy tbh,
if it doesn't already have a remote kill switch, then get one, runaways end up being expensive or painful if you hit yourself or anyone else for that matter,
i run a futaba 4pls on most of my rc's , futaba is a reliable brand to have,
most important just enjoy the car and upgrade as and when you see fit or break stuff (y)
