Ok where to start. I am pretty new to the world of RC. I ran into a couple of people who were running 30cc gas powered 1/5th scale RC's and I fell in love but there stuff was a bit expensive.

i am debating on the Baja 5B 2.0 w/2.4 GHz Gunmetal towerhobby has a 72.00 off code which brings it to 1022. thoughts? This will be for pure bashing around. Im not sure what else to look at in the 1000 price range

IMO, it really depends on you. When you say bashing is that in puddles, mud, snow? if so look else where or spend sometime waterproofing it.. And after owning a handful of Losi's and 2 hpi savages working on losi is flat out easier.. I myself am getting the dbxl within the next 2 weeks

The 5B has scale realism down, but the Losi is going to be the more rewarding driving experience. The 4wd makes a huge difference. The 5B is faster top end, the Losi DBXL is faster everywhere else. The 5B is not the easiest platform to wrench on, the Losi is very spacious and clear in its layout and hardware access. The HPI will require expensive mods to be as durable as the Losi outta' the box. I vote Losi or Redcat Chimera as a dark horse, with the bigger engine and all....I own a Losi 5ive T and it is incredible!

i do like the Losi DBXL which i decently in my price range it starts @ $1000

Question about the Redcat Chimera you mentioned. Isnt red car from what I have heard junk?

the Chimera on amazon is only $640.00. I does look nice but I don't want to buy a money pit. I wont be bashing in rain or puddles more then likely , rocks, sand, dirt mounds n such.

No the redcat is not junk IMO I have several redcat 5th scales that I drive hard and I have several other companies I do not work on the redcat any more then I do the others, but when I do have to work on the redcat its the most easiest platform out there to do repairs on. I love the chimera and I love my Losi 5T also 4 wheel drive is a day and night experience of driving and handling over 2 wheel drive.

The Redcat brand is marred by its smaller scale offerings and entry level RTR tag peddled by ebay sellers with no dealer support. The truth is the 1/8th. scale models and up are quality platforms that hold up well for experienced hobbyists like many of us here that are accustomed to proper maintenance to get the most out of them. The price tag represents the savings of a less established brand. Nike vs. Converse, etc...both have quality products ,but the air Jordan's command the big $$$, just like Traxxas, HPI, Losi, etc...

Very well said!!!! you could not give me any of there 1/10 scale or below.

fair enough. I was not knocking redcat by any means its just every where I go forums wise I get alot of crap for even asking about RedCat products such as there junk, weak parts & so fourth.

Thanks for the info

Forums, can be the garbage cans of public opinion sometimes......There are probably other redcat owners out there that have a different experience than mine and would be completely right in trashing the brand if they were mistreated. I have owned 2- 1/8 scale redcats, and they were both fantastic, took a pounding at much lower price than the comparable Ofna's etc.......Redcat showed me good customer service during a warranty claim once, as well. The Rampage MT is pretty stout with a few easy mods...

If I were going to drop a grand for a RTR setup I'd go with the Losi DBXL but the motor is kinda small and it needs a nice tuned pipe... I have buddy with the Redcat Chimera and it's pretty good bang for the buck with a 30 cc motor but the shock setup and gas tank placement need to be modified to work easier... 4wd are all I drive, I havea Losi 5ive-T and used to have Redcat Dune-Runner so I have a few years experience with working on the Redcat platform...I'm eager to see the after market support for the Losi DBXL take off.. which for me would be another plus...

You can custom order a DBXL from Largescale RC with a few motor options installed. I think a 29.5cc motor swap installed ads 150.00 or so to the price, not bad and probably the way I will go when I order one.

there are loads of 1/5 out there for that sort of cash, the losi dessert buggy looks o.k, quality wise im not so sure its there with its big brother tho.
if its 4wd then you can look at the ftx, mcd rr, fg 4wd etc.maybe save a little more for the losi5t? if your not so bothered with 4wd then fg make great largescale trucks.again easy to maintain and loads of spares and hop ups

personally I think the hpi 5b is easy to work on, have a huge used spare market, loads if hopups .
I agree with whats said above, the losi seem to need a tuned engine and pipe to get moving.me myself I like 2wd, find 4wd slightly predictable and boring unless your running a crazy motor which normally means more in upgrades.

I just bought a DBXL and this is my first 5th scale. I took it out and had a blast, to me it wasn't all that slow. I do want to get a bigger motor, maybe the end of the summer IDK. But for me coming from a Revo 3.3 it's great.

What ever you buy you will need parts support. If you can't get parts original quality is of little use, as it will soon be useless junk.

I get great parts support from Dave's Discount Motors for my 5ive-T. He also supports HPI very well. I get what I order in 2 to 3 days with the cheapest shipping.

I have a redcat xsc,, and a king motor 001 which I converted to a truck,,, for less than 500 bucks, u get a good ready to run, I had bought the 001 roller for 330 bucks ,,,and it still came with extra suspension parts , tools etc,, just no engine or radio,, and the stock flysky gt3b is a great radio,, and receivers are like 7 bucks ,, anyway upgrade servos,, add killer rc kill switch,, which your gonna do anyway to the 1000 dollar 5b,, and go have fun and still be way under 1000 bucks ,,, if something breaks, replace with better,, as far as I can tell, hpi Baja parts are direct fit,, and with tgn, ddm, largescalerc,, and others, u have lots of aftermarket to choose from,,, and what u would do to the king motor, u would probably gonna be doing same thing to the hpi
