you ll find alot of varried response on the cloner issue, im ANTI clone in a big way.
i just cant condone the way those companies do business.

impo, go with the HPI, and you ll have alot more satisfaction than just fullfilling some RC fun.

I agree 100%. I converted to 5t from 5b, things I noticed, landing is slightly better although still rear biased (depending on bumpers and I use TR quick diff which is heavy). Handling improved off road wise. didn't play onroad yet.

I did a test with buying a KMv1 clone baja and found that although I saved money in the beginning, in the long run I will spend more to replace or upgrade due to some differences. There have been some revisions and changes but I believe the motor is still the same clone design.
You don't get a warranty either. This pertains mostly to the US buyers.
You will get warranty replacement parts easy in the US.

Is it right or not is a personal thing with how someone thinks about the long term industry effect.
I personally think it will not be a good long term business solution for the industry. I will not hold it personally against a buyer of the clone model but, will hold the industry/government responsible for the failure. Sometimes we need to step back, think about something we put hard time and money into, and watch someone not just use/change the idea but use the entire idea... I'm afraid it is allot like I view socialism - Eventually why bother with ideas? :(

For me there will always be a Market for copy goods
As long as I can afford the genuine article then that's what it will be.
 
I say go for the real deal. Im personally wont buy cloned rigs and don't like to see cloners using inferior parts and 3rd world slave labor to cut the jugular of the guy or gal that designed, build, and market the original. 1/5th scale isnt cheap, was not meant to be. And in the long run there relay isnt a very good savings, when most that run clones, either break parts or just upgrade to the real stuff anyway. So where is the savings in that?

But to each their own.

thats the thing i,am a clone owner and my baja is allmost 80% hpi now, but it seems hpi owners upgrade with none hpi aftermarket parts so they are not staying loyal to hpi, i was looking at a brand new 5b it was from old stock and one of the 1st 5b,s and to be honest the quality of the early hpi,s was,nt that good. and lets not forget hpi use a cy motor wich is a cloned zenoah:D
 
Wells said Pab. I think it depends on your driving style.HPI or not ,your going to bust it one way or the other.don't forget Paul the Fuelie engine is a clone of a CY which is a clone of a Zenoah...work that out!
I belive HPI bought a car called a Blackout out a few months ago that was a direct clone of a Redcat???(maybe wrong)
If people who own HPI's are so loyal why do they buy aftermarket parts???

I understand those points of starting out with a clone.

But upgrading to high quality aftermarket parts to replace potential weak links or high wear parts built by HPI or any other OEM is different from buying a cheap copy from a stolen design. Not only are there cheap cloned cars/trucks/buggies but the cloned cheap aftermarket parts as well.

Im not downing anyones right to choose what they choose. Money is tight these days for most everyone. So if anyone chooses to buy a clone well so be it. Its just my choise to buy what I buy because I can afford to.

My other thought is if saving a couple hundred on a clone is the make or break deal to purchase a real Baja or not, how can someone then afford to actually run/break/repair/upgrade later. These are not cheap RadioShack or Walmart toys.

I hope im not giving the impression that I have anything against peeps that buy clones. By no means do I any issue that way. Im just giving my opinion on what and why I buy what I buy. So its all good. :cool:
