Running MCD Rally Car 26 Z would changing Clutch spring or new clutch be better for take off. Was thinking of changing the clutch spring be a good mod? Was going to change the gear for more top end but do not want to bog off the line.:helpsmilie:

What other mods in order would you do?

The Elcon clutch is a good choice but I would suggest changing the stock clutch spring for a high response one - for example the red HPI one.

I use them in a couple of my MCDs and the later engagement point improves the performance irrespective of whether you use a stock or modified engine. The car will no longer bog down off the line or when accelerating out of slow speed turns and it is possible to gear for a higher top speed!!!!

If you don't plan to use an alloy gear/engine carrier plate then I would install the MCD steel gear set (23 and 26 teeth).

Alloy upgrades like the servo tray will reduce flex but are not essential - they look good though!!!

Providing you change the clutch spring, install the steel gears (and/or an alloy gear plate) and most importantly make sure the engine does not run hot, you will have many hours of fun with the car.

the red hpi high rev spring does only work with a hpi clutch
the hpi clutch i lighter and therefor the red spring does not have to be as firm to get to the 8000.

if you do not have the hpi clutch, then get the FG 7500 spring, it is much firmer as the 8000 hpi

(hope you understand what im trying to say):)

Prehn, I have used the red HPI spring with stock CY and Zenoah clutches and in the case of the CY one, the clutch started to engage at 7,800 rpm - this was checked using an Oddified ECU which displays the current engine speed (rpm) and also the peak engine speed during each run......

I will try the FG one you suggest and report my findings.

One product I don't recommend is the KCR lightened Zenoah clutch - they claim it enagages at 9,000 rpm but I found it was engaging at 6,800 rpm.

OK guys, here's the deal with the HPI Red spring...

The red spring only performs as described on the specially lightened clutch shoes found on the stock 26cc CY 'fuelie' found in the SS. On regular unlightened shoes, Zenoah or CY, you see the behaviour that clive observed (engagement 1k rpm sooner). The only incompatibility between the red spring and the Zen shoes, is the smaller holes for the spring in the zen shoes. All you have to do is scrape off the powder coating from the spring and it just fits. Your LHS is right in a way, Prehn, but the solution is easy ;)
