Reading the Rules!
Are they for looks in your opinion? Do they hold the grime in, or do they actually protect your shocks? Just looking for some feedback folks

Not for me. I agree, they keep the big stuff out and the small stuff in, I think you are worse off running them. They all interfere with the operation of the shock too.
Light dust and dirt in big crap out. They are a maintenance item. If you like taking apart the shocks every once in awhile then they are great but if you want to put them on and leave them - No good.
I have some on my MT and they seem to keep all the big out and let only light dust in. They are wire tied to the top and have a fabric rubber binder at the bottom and completely cover the spring stop. The dust does not hinder performance or allow scratching but its in there. My Baja has some inter tube ones I made over them - Same thing but the bottom is not covered the same.
The dirt gets in from the bottom spring holder slot that cannot be covered well enough. In my opinion it would depend on the type of cover you get some are for looks and others cover better and keep more out. I've done some testing and it does keep more out then without but again its a maintenance item.
Bottom line for me:
Slight advantage covers.

on my standard fg shocks i had bad horsie shock covers .
but i havnt bothered with the fg alloys .

I think the best will be the HPI boots. Thy fit inside the springs and create a tit fit against the shaft and blokes dirt and dust.
