Yesterday I picked up my Baja and it came with a 3 channel HPI 27mhz FM radio..

I was committed to changing over to 2.4ghz as I assumed I would have to upgrade the radio to 3 channel (For a Killer Be) and was planning to buy a cheap Ansmann W3. But the radio now is 3 channel and now i have it I wonder if I am wasting my money.

I have used 27mhz for decades and had zero problems, so why change now? I do like the idea of not having such a long aerial.. But other than that, I question the point.

Perhaps with Petrol, 27mhz/FM is a bad choice because of interference generated by the engine? At the end of the day, its only £54 and I could probably sell my 27mhz set for £25...

What are peoples thought.. Should I just try the 27mhz for now.. Or is 2.4ghz really the way to go?

Jon

i still use 27mhz with my baja and to be honest the range is poor to say the least, i,d go for 2.4 ghz at that price hoping to change over myself soon.

2.4 all the way. one day someone will turn on a radio the same channel as you and your rc will crash and cost you more than that radio... 2.4 is locked in from your radio to rc. much safer. no need to walk around the group and ask "is anybody on ch 5?"

2.4 GHz all the way.
I'm using older Spektrum DX3.0 systems with receivers - I can use up to 4 models on the same transmitter - saves having transmitters everywhere.
There was an offer on Ebay £80 for one Tx and one Rx.
Range is excellent.
If you get a Killer Bee - which you must, or similar reliable kill switch - be certain that your radio system is compatible with the Killer Bee you select.
Spektrum radios require the 's' suffix. You don't need a 3-channel. I have 3-channel radio systems but use a KB 2-channel system - you simply turn off your radio.

Thanks all.. I will go for 2.4ghz.. I am not going to pay a lot.. The Ansmann W3 looks ideal.. I already have the Killerbee on order (V2) so need to avoid Spektrum..

Thanks again for your help.

I have this set & its decent for the money. Easy to use, feels good, no binding or range problems and has the same features as sets costing 3-4 times more. Its distributed by Schumacher who have been in the rc game for years so has reputable backing. They seem to sell out fast so be quick!!

This set looks exactly the same but for less money. Might be worth a look.

Get down to your local model shop & have a look at the Core RC set & Im sure you will have good 1st impressions.

looks good mate il put on my want list but the trouble is its a big list i cant realy use my car at the min due to needing a few bits ie new clutch gasket for the oddified engine new shock oil and my hpi wheel conversion so it may have to wait a tad longer

I have just ordered the Ansmann W3 for £54. There is now a new model called the W3.1 which is is £25 more, but I asked the model shop if it was worth the extra and got a resounding NO!

Now I come to think about it, I don't even know why I asked the question.. I am also learning to fly and am using 2.4ghz on my planes.. On Sunday at the club, I was flying Solo (for the first time) and there was another guy using 35mhz.. His plane went out of control once and headed over the specators.. And then a few mins later, he lost control again and buried it into the field at full speed.

Then 20 mins later, the same thing happened to another guy, again whilst I was stood next to him.. FOrtunatly for him, he managed to recover and land safely.. I must admit, I started to get a bit paraniod that it was ME who was causing this.

Apparently, this is the 4th incident in as many days and it made me question why anyone would still fly on 35mhz.. With this in mind, why did I even consider sticking with 27mhz.

Fully understand.. My KillerBee is on order, and to be honest, I am not happy to run my Baja before I get it... So it looks like I am just going to have to look and lust after it, and fit my upgrades until the KillerBee arrives.. Of course I will have a little spin, but I am going to be really concious about where I run it.

I caught a tree to stop my redcat mt from going swimming once... no kill switch and a dead battery....

I pulled a kill switch out 2 weekends ago to check my car on a spektrum (non spektrum kill switch) and had a runaway. lucky it jumped a round curb and landed in grass. could have been much worse... also lucky the signal came back when it landed... never again will I even test one without a kill switch involved... buddy had a runaway with his, same deal, pulled his kill switch because it wasn't starting... well we know why.. it has radio problems haha
