After a few good tuning sessions i realized i hadn't checked the mesh of my spur and pinion, end result mesh too tight gear wearing out quickly.:o My question is do i buy steel spur or stick with plastic? Is the steel gonna last longer? (provided i check the mesh often)I know the plastic one is 6 times cheaper than the steel. Any thoughts, opinions would be greatly appreciated

Not had an FG but plenty of Large Scales and always gone with steel gears, stripped too many plastic gears on my old baja.to get the mesh right use some writing paper and put it between the gears and offer up the gears so that they trap the paper but not too tightly. Tehn turn the gear to release the paper.

a plastic spur gear if meshed well will last i,ve had 9months out of my plastic spur, and remember a plastic one may strip thus saving your diff, with a steel spur it could jam up blowing your diff gears.

Good point kinda like the a-arms if there nylon they have some give if you go aluminum they don't give. even with this minor set back these things are just too cool. Thanks!!

Take care with mixing material types.
I have steel spur and pinions on both of my large scales.
I've read that if you get an aluminium PINION, then stick with a PLASTIC SPUR, and don't install a steel one, else you'll stuff up the pinion.

Taking care in the installation - alignment of the motor and meshing - is the key.

As stated above, get a decent piece of card - cornflakes packet as a minimum - and tighten such that this will just pass through without jamming, and that should be it.
Always check alignment at all points as you may have a little 'ovalling', where the mounting may be slightly out of round.

I like the metal on plastic, it's much quieter. I've got some all metal and it sounds like a dinner bell going off. had some metal gears that didn't last a day, some have been on since I built the rc. the quality of the metal makes a big difference for sure as well. if it isn't hardened properly, they will wear just as fast as plastic

Hey can anyone tell me how to adjust my spur gear, pinion mesh, what to loosen to adjust ect. Just got my new spur and need some info. Or a website to get directions,Thanks in advance.
