Just got into 5th scale, rightly or wrongly with a Maverick Blackout ST (truggy version), I read that you 'may' need a fuel tank breather???? 2 questions......

1. Why?
2. Is there a special add on kit, or can you 'bodge' one on yourself. if they are available where can I get one in the UK?

maybe thats 3 questions!!!!!

Cheers....if you can help!;)

Unlike nitro, petrol has no problem building pressure, but can get overpressure, so ...

If you look closely at an FG cap, it has a couple of little holes in it.
If you look at some option alloy caps, there's a centre moulding / turning where a tube is attached and normally fed to the back.
This is separate to the IN / OUT fuel feeds to from the carb / tank.

I have noticed that there is a 'very' small hole in the screw cap to my fuel tank that does let air in and out (as I've blown down the fuel tubes), will this suffice??? :(

Fuel tanks need to vent both ways in and out.

When you fill up a tank and subject it to vibration and heat the fuel will create vapour and expand therefore it needs to vent out.

As fuel is being consumed from the tank you need to replace the same volume of fuel with air, otherwise your tank will create a vacuum that will not allow anymore fuel to be drawn through the fuel lines and the first symptoms of this are usually the tune becomes erratic then the engine stalls.

If you ever unscrew your fuel cap and notice a hissing noise that is because it's not venting properly, on warmer days you will notice this more.

A simple piece of tube and a nipple screwed into the tank cap usually works a treat and it's cheap.

Cheers for the help & advice

So I did the nipple thing and piece of tubing (about 6" long) and strapped it to the roll cage, BUT, i'm still getting fuel spitting out of the end of the tubing and the tank is only 1/2/ to 3/4 full?????

Should fuel still be coming out? or is normal? :(

Cheers P

Is the other end of the tube actually dipped into the fuel?

maybe use an elbow on the inside of the tank and aim it towards the side walls to prevent fuel going through.

The breather must always be the highest point in the tank and you don't want the tube on the inside of the tank to be dipped into the fuel or it could cause the fuel to syphon out.

fit a fuel clunk to the end of the tube and cable tie it to the frame. it will help filter out some of the dust it may pull in
