What is the best baja clone?

Looks like the first uploaded pics didn't register.. anyway here some of the pics of my dad's hpi baja and my km ksrc 2.0 baja clone.
[Needless to say, the Baja is in blue and the KM in orange]

What puzzles me about the car's performance is that the hpi seems quicker and more responsive off the mark. Perhaps they use a different clutch-bell since i have to pull the trigger at least a quarter of the way before the car moves at all. The 2.0 also feels at least 2 pound heavier than the baja - speaking of this, does anyone actually know the weights of the baja 5b and 2.0 (part aluminium version)?

hi mate, you might have a higher rpm release clutch spring in yours, which maybe why it doesn't move before your dads' does.

not sure what weight the aluminium KM baja is, but HPI's is 9.6kg.

i think the hpi uses a 6000 rpm clutch and most km ones use a 8000rpm clutch, my t1000 has the 8000 rpm clutch spring on it. that will make the hpi take off with less throttle than the km, the km was setup to take advantage of more umph on take off with the 8k rpm springs. so it might take off a lil slower, but it will have a bit more punch when it does.

Very interesting that, we will have to do some tests with that, it was doing my head in as our km has a 29cc fuelie with a tuned pipe, the ss one and our hpi only has the23 fuelie with the standared tin can,
but something tells me there is more to it, i m sure there are weight issues there as well as i think i gain on him in a chase.
I will see if i can put a video on here of what i mean and you can see your self.
i mean surely our km should be quicker than the hpi with its 29cc and tuned pipe. they both run the same gearing, 57 spur 17 drive.
cheers pal:rolleyes:

no way one from liverpool and one from prescot, i,am from the hood of tuebrook, lol
Sorry mate we are both in prescot, prescot is in knowsley and knowsley is in liverpool and we have our own hood and its well aarrd, lmao.

weight will have something to do on it, for sure, i upgraded some plastic to alloy parts on mine, mostly the shock towers and bracing for them, so i may have added a few grams here and there over stock, but mine has the 2 speed gears setup, not the single, i did do the split alloy tranny case swapout. meaty bones axles, front alloy steering assembly, thats one i reccommend needs to be done. just remember where major stress points will be, like a arms, leave them plastic, leave rear and front bumper assemblies plastic too, that will absorb more impact in those spots. you have to leave spots as they are, so you have give points, if you solid that puppy up too much, it transfers to wherever weakest point is to break.

i still need to tweak a lil on my carb needles after doing this shredstack upgrade with alloy manifold and teflon gaskets, it changes the airflow into carb. allows more air in so you have to get a lil more fuel in there to bring it back to normal. i got my LS pretty much set, the HS needle needs a lil tweaking, but i need to fix that fuel line setup first. the highflow lines has the brass fitting pipes, and theyre loose in old grommet, i got the snappy kit with larger lines and a special grommet it comes with, i will have to get that installed soon

Yeah, it sounds like you know your stuff, that sounds like youve got one tricked up pony there mate and plenty of room over there to race it. :cup-1:

i did a woodster body up as general lee, i got a pic of that

IMG_1355.webp

will have to do some pics soon with body off to show the upgrades, i have a few tho:

shredstack
IMG_1342.webp

external light i mounted for killer bee
IMG_1344.webp

bolt mod i did replpacing the pins holding cover over gears
037.webp

and list goes on< hostile 3 degree rear hubs, the hostile links for top rear a arm to hubs, front alloy steering knuckles, front shock tower and braces, rear shock tower and braces, new stiffer DDM springs all way round, with also the DS shock lower raised perches. DS extenders on rear wheels, new 4pks radio system and new servos 5755 and 7955ts, i also have backup parts i bought in case something breaks, a FULL set front and rear of the rpm arms.

front knuckles also have the fast eddy coneball combo units in there, as well as fast eddy bearings i replaced in entire truck. i also replaced the stock plastic clutch carrier with its metal version, much better durability there now.

and i know theres more i cant think of off top of my head i did to upgrade it.

but if you add up those upgrades with cost of KM itself, prolly not much more than a hpi wooda run me stock, and the km comes stock with metal parts the hpi DOES NOT have. true TR has the upper front and rear plates that are thicker, but km has metal plates already installed, just not as thick at TR's are.

most of us here in this thread section couldnt afford a hpi outright, so we bought the km's instead, with money saved on purchase we go out and buy the hpi parts or other aftermarket made for hpi stuff to upgrade with, so, in a sense we ARE supporting hpi, just wished the hpi hardcore peeps that wander in here and preach to us, would understand this.

Omg thats one good lookin truck, but i cant understand that you feel you have to justify what you buy, its no body's biusinesss but your own.
