I picked up an X-Maxx on eBay for a good deal. It came with a Leopard 5882 and Max5 esc. Some cheap Turnigy 4s lipos rated at 20c as well as a Futaba 3pv which I really like this radio so far!

It also came with the MadMad 1/5 giant grip wheel/tires. T-bone skid plate and wheelie bar combo.

The castle 6.5mm connectors are ok but I was highly suspicious of the electrical tape used. After opening it up it was a giant mess! Went ahead and swapped over to EC8 plugs

Initial test was with a 29t/54t gear ratio
With the cheap batteries I hit 64mph. I then tried my high quality SMC batteries and hit 69mph.
Tried a 50t spur and hit 71.5 mph:

At this point the tires are ballooning pretty bad so I am looking at getting some foams made.
Here is a comparison of the wheels purchased next to my 1/8 scale speed runner BSR foams:

The plan is to max out what the Leopard 5882 can do then I will install the TP Power 5670 which is rated at nearly 3x the power!

Had purchased a gpm cush drive eliminator part. It's going back! Screw holes were not tapped and the bearings are smaller than the originals (no bueno!)

I ran this center drive / transmission output from Integy just 1 time for about 10 mins. Foolish of me to not pull it apart before and locktite everything. I should know better with cheap Chinese parts... screws backed out and began interference with the lower bulkhead. Also looks like the splines won't hold long, time will tell.

Took my son to an indoor track (our first time) to drive his 2wd Slash. It was a blast! The people there let me know I could run the x-maxx there also. I was surprised thinking it would destroy that track. I'm excited to go back and try it out.20181009_115908_1539219687954.jpg

The Leopard 5882 is an impressive motor. I suspect Leopard has under rated its power which is kinda like shooting yourself in the foot as a marketing strategy. Most RC companies tend to do business the other way around.
To be honest I'm afraid to try the TP Power motor... it will take a gentle throttle application for sure!
I have been considering swapping over to my Castle XLX just because it has a better control software.
At the very least I'd like to compare the two.
i jus got me a garmin edge 200 to do sum speed runs with me rc's....will b testing my x maxx for sure(y)..that black tape is shocking:eek::eek:.....
Always fun buying a used RC vehicle. Glad I looked closer and got things fixed correctly now.
Let me know how your speed runs go, some competition is always fun!

New PB this week at a new location 72.5mph
I was expecting a few more mph out of this gear change. I may be running into two walls here (aerodynamics and amperage output limits of the ESC)
Will be doing some adjustments and see what changes I can make to push this thing further.

Video of the run this week (only change was 29/46 gearing)

Cant believe someone would electric tape connectors on..... best of luck on your venture. And I would try out the castle esc. I can say the difference it made in my savage conversion for drivability in the programming. Plus the software is super easy to use.

I agree, Castle makes a great ESC!
I have had a few of theirs and all were great.

Swapped in the Caslte XL-X and the TP Power 5670 motor.
Held off on running it due to weather.
Thanks Giving holiday rolled around and took it out to a park to show my brother in-law.

Not sure which part failed first the aluminum piece that holds the spur gear or the spur gear it-self but it broke apart and damaged a few parts. (spur holder, spur shaft, spur gear, main center drive shaft, pinion gear)

New parts on order to swap over to a belt drive.... something I had been wanting to do anyway!

Data logs indicate ESC output was 8611 watts (8611 / 746 = 11.5 hp)
I was in the grass and probably squeezed near 60% throttle, the GPS only got as high as 45mph so it certainly was not going fast yet. Not sure if the 30k rpm is accurate on the logs with a 6 pole motor.

Truck will be down for repairs for a few weeks but hopefully can get in some high speed runs once repaired!!!

Got some time to turn wrenches on the X-Maxx this past week.

Replaced the center main shaft with a billet part from Integy

Did an inspection of all the moving parts and found the source of some noise while under throttle

Ordered a set of spiral diff gears that are supposed to be machined instead of cast steel.

Also picked up a 1950's lathe. Emco unimat which is pretty awesome. Not sure yet what I'll make but great to have!

Went out and made some runs today with video.

First one is a POV video with the GoPro's telemetry. Didnt push it to full speed because the camera sticks up and is quite expensive...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I53er_1WtEk

Second one is a speed run. Garmin recorded 70.3 and GoPro recorded 71 (GoPro is much higher frequency GPS/ AKA more accurate)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWu8YWFFACk

Watching the GoPro speed data afterwards I can see that the speed was steadily climbing right as I let off the throttle. It probably had several more MPH available before topping out. Just didnt have a large enough space. Or I could have been more agressive on the initial start of the run. Slowly applying the throttle smoothly is a tricky thing.
