im new here, but not new to the mechanical world.i recently was checking all the comments, problems, helpfull hints ect. here in the forum and i stumble in something very important subject wich is the oil, what oil to use or whats the proper oil mix ect. and i start reading and i found out that not everybody pay attention or comment on the properties of having the right oil for the right engine wich is a high reving air cooled beast.if you wondering what this guy is talking about?...im going to shear with you some information and some of my personal expiriences in the field (and i do this just to let you guys know im not kidding around)
15 plus years as a mechanic, the last 6 fully as the so called "2cyclemechanic",in that last six became a STHIL SILVER TECHNITIAN,(money is the only thing holding me from been a gold tech...my boss money).thats enought off me now back to oil.what i realy want is to have an understanding of something so simple that is generally overview, and can affect your investments.
BASICS
oil comes from 100-60 million years crud, process, handle, packages, distributed and sold, but we cant forgot about the most famous of all synthectic oils, witch are type 1,alkyl diester oils or type 2,polyester oil...google it!
also we got animal oils, vegetable oils and mineral oils they don't perfomed to the standarts of high power engines of today because of there natural limits.
FUNCTIONS OF OIL
1.it lubricates, reducing friction between moving parts.
2.it cools various parts of the engine by transfering the heat.
3.it tends to seal the combustion chamber by fillingthe spaces between the cylinder walls and piston rings(yup zenoah has one...)
4.it cleans,in four stroke engines will carry sludge and other residues away from the moving parts and deposit them in the filter.
5.it aids to prevent corrosion by protecting moving parts from oxygen, water and other corrosive agents.
6.it serve as cushion between parts were impact loads are involved.
by expiriences and knowledge i found out that not all oils are made equal...
ones are made specially for outboards(water cooled),others are made for outdoor equipment(air cooled)also for profesional outdoor equip.(high performance air cooled)they are formulated for the used of the engine and the enviroment of operation.
in many years of talking to the people in the field, profesionals(lawmscapers, tree climmers ect.),home owners, old timers ect. i heard so many
stories of people doing the unthinkable....using the wrong oil....from motor oil to rear end oil to corn oil to used oil and so on,because usually nobody told him nothing when they got the saw or they never read the instructions...anyway
for this kind of engines needs to be the best, cause you putting the best parts that money can buy right??? well let see HIGH REVING AND AIR COOLED this is my opinion on brands because what i seen with my own eyes...im talking about STHIL brand oils...im going to shear with you my expiriences...
im working like always in my shop area and im grab another work order customer is a known for using and using equipment that to my standarts and yours will be just for parts, the abuse levels on his equipment is inmense...the eqipment is a first generation sthil 4mix(4 stroke engine that runs in 50:1 mix) trimmer,i did my diagnostics and looks like the exhaust valve broke off,i checked the serial number in the pc for service history and i found something shocking...never been in the shop for nothing in the last 3 years(they used the crap out of this trimmer and ran it the last few days or month w/o air filter,24/7 basis)well i was curious to see the insides of this rare specimen,to my surprice i look like a year old inside...sthil and many other engine manufactures places groove lines on the skirts of the pistons to determent the wear patterns of engines ect...the groves on this engine were intact just normal wear of a year old engine, when i replaced the valve and put it back it crank like nothing happen,i keep track of the engine and finally after 1 more year of abuse the engine die...i ask the customer/owner of the landscaping company about the oil that he was using and he said "i used sthil" witch i later confirm it was true by checking all the buying history....
all that to say used the right oil...i like to know if those of you that have a dyno can make a test run to see the diferent oil benefites same gas, same engine diferent oils
