I know that everyone has their own methods of mounting tires & foams on wheels to get a perfect balance.

I just got my new set of FG foams and tires and wanted to mount them on my fg wheels but i cant seem to get a perfect wheel balance when i put the tires on the wheels.

I didnt glue my tires to the wheels yet and i wanted to see if anyone has some suggestions on how to get a perfect balance prior to gluing the tires.

Thanks
Mike

is there any other way of mounting the tires without lead weights?

How does the FG factory mount the tires to get the balance perfect. Any insight will be appreciated.

thanks

Thats what I was going to suggest, using the lead weights like the crawler guys do, you can buy them at most hobby stores. I'm assuming the factory just mounts them then glues them on from what I've seen...I could be wrong though.

QUICKLY, BEFORE YOU GLUE, ....
One reason I changed tyres, wheels, etc., was because the eediot who assembled my truck has 2 H left tyres and 2 M right tyres.
If you've bought a mix, ensure the letters match.
Stupid comment 'though it is, it might stop your truck doing so many donuts !!!

Al.

PS I use golf players' stick on lead roll if I notice the wheel vibrating - you cut it to size. Like 1:1, always best to balance when mounted.

My problem seems to be that the foam is not evenly being distributed inside the wheel when everything is mounted. Thats why my wheel looks uneven when i spin it on the truck. Any suggestions how to get the foam to layer evenly?

Mike,

Knead it like dough - gently.
Then perhaps even SLOWLY roll the truck for a few hundred yards, but best way is feeding it with your hands, that's what I found.

Al,
I"ve been doing that. Even with original fg foams, it still isnt quite right. I tried both: gluing foams evenly around the bead of the rim and alsO tried not gluing the foams.

Nothing seems better. Same result...

I don't glue the foams, just the rims of the tyres, and let the foams 'find their own way'.
Don't know if it's right or not, but works for me.

Al,
I tired not gluing the foams to the rims but when i try to slip on the tires on, the foam shifts at certain places and creates an uneven surface.

I think that if u glue the foams to the rim bead ( both inner and outer ), the foam doesn't shift as much when the tire is slipped on.

I personally don't have foams in my tires... The damn tires are too hard as it is... Foams just make them even harder!

I did some F1 tires recently. that was the toughest tire gluing job I have ever done. I ended up putting the foams inside the tire first and coating the rim with vaseline. that was the only way I could find to slide the tires and foams on the rims or the foam was folding inside... also a good idea to flip the foam inside out and cut the edge on a 45 degree angle so it doesn't get in the way of the bead when gluing.

after I got the tires on and worked them into place I just cleaned the vaseline off really good first with cleaner then used isopopyl alcohol and q tips to ensure it as clean and dry to glue

ive heard some people talking about wrapping abit of tape around the foam(only abit) to try stop them from creasing when putting in wheel.

I realise this isn't exactly what you're looking for but.....

I've just glued 10 pairs of wheels and tyres. They were all hormann rims with a mixture of FG, Hormann and SLD tyres.

Get yourself some of this ..... I'll explain later.

First job is to fold the foam around the rim and cut to size the glue the 2 ends together - for glue, I've never had any issues with this stuff.

Next job is to rough up the edges of the rim where the bead will sit, i just use 40 grit emery cloth for this - THIS IS A MUST IF YOU'RE USING CHROME EFFECT WHEELS!

Clean the tyre with the kicker (activator spray) to remove any mold release agent.

Fit the foam to the rim the give it a good wet with the kicker and the tyre will slide on like a greased up fat bird.

The kicker will dry in no time which is when you can start to glue the tyre bead to the rim.

Most people have their own way but I pull the bead back a bit, pour in some glue then quickly push the bead back in, do this all way round and then leave it to go off - you can use the kicker if you're in a rush but I tend not to.

Hope this helps

Mike
