Castle Creations has released a brushless motor kit for the HPI Baja!

The Castle Creations Baja brushless kit contains the Mamba XL ESC, a Neu-Castle 2028 brushless motor, CC Blower motor cooling shroud, and all metal brackets required to convert a gasoline powered HPI Baja to mind blowing electric power... up to 10 horse power!

The new Mamba XL is the only controller on the market able to handle the loads required to power these surprisingly heavy vehicles to insane speeds. Castle Creations can prove it too, as the Mamba XL features all of the standard Mamba series programming features PLUS a first for the RC car market; data logging.

The controller actually measures and records parameters such as your battery volts, amp draw, motor rpm, controller temperature and battery ripple voltage. This is a great way to make sure that the entire setup is performing within limits. It's also a great way to show that this combo is easily capable of pumping out up to 10 horsepower (peak).

The Baja chassis has plenty of room for up to 8S 2P LiPo, (33.6 volts). Run times with 8S 1P 5,000 mAh class cells are approximately 15 minutes, depending on driving style. The on board switching BEC is able to lower that motor pack voltage to 5 volts, at up to 5 amps to provide the power needed by those big steering servos.

Applications: HPI Baja 5B and 5T vehicles. Motor and controller will work in other vehicles, conversion kit plates are engineered specifically for the HPI products.

For a cynic like me (:D:D) for the price of a good, used Baja, you can buy a conversion kit ...
That was a bit harsh I know, and this does interest some, but I LIKE large scale petrol, 'though I've my fair share of lunatic BL trucks !!

Wow...10 Hp peak output and I imagine being brushless it has torque to match. I would like to see one of these in action. I have Thunderpower 8s 45 amp lipo in a ducted fan jet...and that 1 pack was well over 400 bucks...These new brushless motors are a great advancement, just need to get the cost of the lipos down which will happen in time.

For 800 bucks (after the motor and esc) plus batteries and a charger to charge 8s, that's like 1100-1200 bux! That's a hard pill to swallow, I know it may be fast, but that's a lot of cash...

But here it is in action...

Watch closely you cane see it reverse for just a second! Reverse is something that we have been trying to figure out.

Whats the run time? Probably 6-8 mins then you'll need to have another set of batts on the go at about 100.00 GBP a pop!....I'll stick with the two strokes.

Its like anything else I suppose...its expensive when new, but its a starting point. Give it some time and it will become more affordable and run times will expand as it gets in folks hands and like most things, as people figure it out, they find ways of making these cheaper, faster, longer run time, etc etc.

And Im not refering to copycats(cloners), but just sometimes all it takes is a new perspective from an advanced user to come up with creative ways of advancing the technology.

When I first started messing with RC stuff, it was back @ 1985 with a Tamiya Ford BigFoot and the batteries available then were at the cheapest @ $75 or more and had a total run time of about 2 minutes. $75 isnt exactly chump change now, but back then it was 2/3rds of a paycheck.

I just ordered one for $550 and am going to put it in my redcat XB-e if the redcat electrics are not up to par. $1200 for an electric large scale including batteries is not too bad. The redcat comes with batteries but I will pick up some more. My first FG was $1200 and did not include radio gear.

I love the gas large scale but with the electric, I can run it in my backyard without annoying the entire neighborhood. Can also run at the park without the police getting complaints about the noise.
