Hi guys :)

ok i ben looking at various brake systems for my FG MB Pro, I was gunna get front hydros (Mechatech) but in the near furture im gunna be getting some Hurrax Monster rims, but they cant be fitted with in-wheel brakes!

So ive been looking at the rear layshaft Hydro kit that mechatech do, has anyone used this before that can let me know how effective it is :) ?

At present im using the stock FG layshaft brake which is a complete waste of time, hardly any stopping power at all! ..its not my servo as im using an mpex power speed. If i get the mecatech layshaft hydro will it be much better than the stock but more importantly will it stop my beetle!

ta dude :)

is it easy to fit? as with the mecatech it says i may need to re-position fuel tank & drill more holes in chassis etc :s ?

Daz ,don't bother with a rear hydro brake mate, they are a waste of money. If you buy an alloy rear brake and upgrade the disc to fibre or drilled metal that will be enough to lock the rear end up.
Let me explain, when you slam on with a layshaft brake ,as it says,it locks the layshaft but thats all it does.If you notice your diff action ,once the layshaft is locked you can still run the wheels in opposite directions so this effectively doesn't provide a "REAL" rear brake set-up.They are great in straight line braking but don't really work in braking on corners.
Why not buy the rear hydro's instead?

cheers for reply guys :)

I cant go for the front or rear hydros as im going to be fitting some hurrax rims in near future & they wont accept in wheel brakes (hydros) so my only other alternative is to go for the layshaft hydro, or like voo said i could just upgrade my stock layshaft brake to the metal disc setup for the layshaft?

Hi Daz, just out of interest, whats so special about these wheels and does the benefit out weigh the extra cost of sorting your brakes out? I've never had any issues with the FG layshaft brake what so ever (steel or fibre disc type) The people I know who so use discs all round have the rears dialed off so much that they're almost doing nothing. If you have decent servos, front discs and a layshaft brake it's possible to great braking performance for any occation.

hiya mate :)

i just like the look of them & they are slightly bigger than the FG bigfoots & low profile so a lil mnore ground clearance for bashing etc :)

What i might do is try the metal upgraded layshaft disc 1st see how that is, cuz at the mo my stock layshaft brake does nothing hardly, prob cuz of the extra weight from the alloy ive added :s ?

Don't buy one, I might have one in my odd bits box.

I'm just painting my workshop at the mo so everything is up in the air so to speak, if you're in the area just pop in and we'll have a look. Cost 1 x bacon sausage & egg butty with tom sauce and a cup of tea if you're feeling flush.
