How-To Check and Set Your Coil Gap

[Bigger the Better]

Here is a quick How-To on checking and setting your coil gap.
This was done on a Baja which will be a bit different then other models. Other models will be easier. :laugh:

First you will need to remove the 4 bolts that hold your pull start on.



Remove the pull start.



Next we will need to remove the engine fan cover.

Remove the two top screws from the top of the fan cover.



Remove the two bottom bolts from the fan cover.



Remove the bolt from the side support.



Remove the two bolts from the bottom. This may require some heat if locktight was used.




Remove the fan cover.



This will now expose the fan/flywheel and coil.



This is your coil.



Loosen the two bolts that secure the coil. You only need to loosen them.



The coil is to be set at .3mm and max .4mm.
A business card is around .1/.15mm I fold a card in half and this gets me .3mm.




Slip the card between the coil and flywheel/fan.
Push down the coil on the business card and tighten the two bolts.




After your done just spin the flywheel and remove the card.



Your done. Replace all the items in opposite order using blue locktight where needed.

Looks good. Thanks for the pics. But the pull starter can stay bolted to the fan case. Just remove the 7 fan case bolts and the two screws at the top.

It will set the space between your coil and the magnet on the flywheel. This is what gives your spark plug its spark. If the space is too far away spark can be lost. Too close and it may rub.

Not really. As long as it doesn't come loose. It sometimes gets knocked out of spacing on a hard crash or what not. Just something to make sure looks right and if not reset it.
