The wheels will turn when I have the motor off on my Baja 5b. When I start it, the wheels then become stuck. The motor revs and the buggy goes no where. There is black dust all over the back of the buggy. Did I burn up my differential? I am not familiar with these large scale buggies but would assume they are similar to the nitro and electric smaller vehicles.

I figured this will be an easy answer for a lot of you guys hear and appreciate any help/insight. Thanks in advance

the black dust might be from your clutch shoes (check to see if the clutch shoes are burned up), as far as the steering problems goes you may have an interferance issue due to the ignition on the engine. you did not specify what radio system you had so i am assuming it is either a stock hpi or a flysky radio, you will hear alot of compalints of this happening with a spektrum branded radio but i personally have seen no reason to believe this as i run a DX3s and have never experienced a failure.

so you think the black dust is from the clutch shoes? The wheels spin when the car is not started and the wheels do not spin after I start the car. I cannot push it and roll it and when I pull the trigger and rev the motor it also goes no where. The wheels lock up after I start it. Does this sound like clutch shoes?

And not sure where you read about an electrical problem? Lol I have had zero electrical problems. And by the way, are you just using the factory failsafe on the spektrum receiver or do you have another failsafe on top of the receiver like the killer bee killswitch? Its funny you mention the DX3S. I just purchased that on thursday and should be here anyday. Are you running the speedometer and the temperature monitor?

yes, see when the wheels arent on teh ground it doesn't take much to get them moving but when it is on teh ground there is more resistance. trust me your wheels not moving on the ground is because of your clutch shoes. i'll be on for a while so go ahead and check your clutch and report back after all i'll be here ;)

wheels on the ground or now, the car will move when the motor is not running, but will not move after I start the motor. The car being on the ground or not is making no difference whether the wheels can move or not, its when the motor is running that the wheels don't move on a stand or on the ground. I don't have time to fiddle with it tonight, but I think you are right. It seems to me like it is the clutch shoes.

Any recommendations on the best clutch shoes?

ok let me clarify the black "dust" as you call it sounds like clutch shoe dust. if something is in the clutch soe/bell area broken or out of whack it could cause teh dust you describe.

as far as not being able to push it that could be bad bearings, bent parts or busted gears. as far as my radio i use a killer bee V2-s kill switch and as far as the spektrums failsafe i don't recall setting it up for teh baja but if i did then it returns throttle to neutral OR full brake and steering to straight.

with that said, check your clutch because if your shoes wore out and some chunks of shoe, broken spring, or any other larger sized piece of debris is trapped in the clutch housing it could cause it to jam up and with the black dust you describe i would check the wear on teh shoes to see if they may need replacing. one more thing to check is the clutch bell itself, if you are running the stock hpi bell then you may vave broken the weld on it , burned out a bearing, or melted the plastic carrier (assuming you are still running the stock plastic carrier of course ;) )

i don't use stock anymore recently getting a good deal on a lauterbacher 4 shoe offroad clutch. so when teh radio is running you have no steering and rear wheels wont turn?????

in that case i say it is a radio interferance problem or improper radio setup.

if the engine is runnign and you have radio interferance causing a glitch or you have the radio improperly set it could be messing with the signal from tx to rx ;)

sorry you asked for she recommendations LOL

well dontknow your budget but teh best are the lauterbacher 4 shoe offroad and the elecon with Titanium bash plate but these to are over 100.00 each but you have the ability to replace shoes and they are adjustable with a setscrew whereas teh stockers require a spring change

when the radio is running I still have full functionality. It is NOT a radio problem. Please re-read my initial post. I think you misunderstood at first lol. When I start the motor, the wheels lock up. I cant turn the rear wheels by hand and when I give it gas the wheels don't turn either. The wheels lock up when I start the buddy, but are not locked up when I turn the car off.

I have ZERO radio issues lol not sure where you are reading this from

now I see your confusion... lol the whole time I was talking about the rear wheels "turning" not the front turning right to left. I am talking like the rear wheels turning forward or backward as if the car was rolling... lol my fault

no worries however it couldnt be a tranny problem if it rolls when engine is off.

brake rotors slipped off brake hex on tranny side (sounds like what it might be)

best thing i could tell you at this point is to dissasemble the brakes, gear plate and clutch setup check for damaged or wore parts and then reassemble making sure you have it done correclty ;)

what you should do is post a vid of what its doing then we can help solve the problem easier
