starting problems

I have been having some bad starting problems recently, I have searched various forums and performed all but one of the fixes (new plug) with the shops closed it's a little difficult altho I have cleaned both the NGK & champion plugs I have but it still fails to start.

I have composed a list of actions to take if it will not start if I have missed any please add to the list.

1. check fuel line for fuel and is not cinked
2. check for compression
3. check the is spark at the plug
4. change to new plug
5. check plug gap
6. If flooded remove plug turn over and pull starter to empty excess fuel.
7. check needle settings return to factory setting


I think that is it but feel free to add more.

If a new plug does not fix my problem and it won't start where should I go from there ?

how was it running previously. did it run fine, then just not want to start. did you roll over and it shut down on ya???

how much fuel thru the motor?
new or old motor?
any work done recently to it?
ect...

got a feeling it may be the isolator block, as I fitted an new filter and believe the bolts may have been too long. Read somewhere this would cause a leak.

Got the truck running today but its very rough and seems to be hunting, when reving it bogs and dies no amount of tweaking the needles helps either. when i first started it seemed fine but once it had warmed up I started to get these issues. I think it may be an air leak but i have sealed the carb & filter. Can anyone help pls

check for air leaks

Check for air leaks around the carb around the cylinder and head. WD 40 works good. spray it around and see if the rpm's stabalize then you have an air leak.

i used wd40 and can find leaks but i ve suggested it to others and some cant seem to find leaks with it. so you may want to use some starting fluid, but use it sparingly. as the starting fluid will strip any oil off the cylinder(if you do have a leak) and may cause a problem, so use it sparringly.

Did you do an upgrade or tear it down before the problems started or did the problem just start one day? Your choke is disengaged or open and not closed right?

only thing I have done is replace the stock air filter, so i guess i could a bad gasket on the intake, but i sealed them with

When changing the filter what gaskets did you need to remove??
What bolts did you remove to get the new air filter on? It is sounding like an air leak like all have said but strange it would just show up unless you accidental loosened the carby screws and popped the seal on the gaskets. Just for the heck of it have you tried starting it without the filter on it in a clean environment so as to not suck anything in? This would eliminate the filter from the equation or might show it to be the problem. You could also try going back to stock and see if the problem is gone.

I just removed the 2 long bolts that go through the filter and carb, and bolt on to the isolator. in doing this the seal is broken on the gaskets. they looked ok but i guess they never made a good seal again even tho I attempted to seal with the loctite. The gaskets did look fairly wet mind u with fuel. I have some new on order so this should cure the problem. At least it starts up now of a sort

ok I striped the intake down blew the carb through and re assembled. started her up and she ran like a dream.

Not going to count my chickens too soon tho so will put a tank through it then look to tune if all is well.

who said these were less maint than nitros
