Hello everyone, I just picked up a used KM Baja from a guy on craigslist for $200, but the problem is that when you start the thing it dies right away? He said that he was in a park with it when it flipped and started doing that. This is my first 1/5th scale so I don't have a lot of experience with them. I'm very mechanically incline so if you guys have any ideas can you let me know? Thanks

I'd say a cracked head, look around the head bolts for very thin cracks...
Other things that might stop it from starting after a tumble:
Soil in the ebd of the exhaust
Coil gap moved, gap should be business card thickness
Air leak around carb
Carb needle settings

to be honest because I got it for so cheap I was planning on buying a new motor for it anyways. There are a lot of nice souped up motors out there for around $250-$300 from Daves. Is that a good way for me to go?

Yes and No.

Usually when you go for a non-stock modified engine you need to upgrade your drivetrain.

If it were me, I would look into a stock zenoah 30.5 or 29cc and just enjoy its reliability.

But, if you plan on going for modded, put aside a stack of hundred dollar bills to compensate for all the new drivetrain parts.

LOL! I agree and since I only plan to run around and have some fun with it. What are some must do upgrades you think I should do besides a killer bee kill switch?

where is the best place to pick up a 30.5 and what can i expect to pay?

You may actually be able to come across a "New-used" one. In other words, some folks buy a HPI kit and upgrade to a new motor right from the get-go, therefore selling their "new-used" one that came from the kit.

Same goes for a new carb as well.

I really don't know what kind of condition the rest of the buggy is in, but you're going to basically want to take apart the entire drivetrain to make sure everything is in fine working order before you do anything.

I would check all shocks, the differential oil, grease for the tranny gears, clutch wear, brake wear as a start. Also, this is good practice for getting to know your buggy.

Thanks for the replys guys. I already have the motor out of it and have decided to buy a new one from Dave Discount Motors. I'm going to check the tranny and differential out before I put it back together.
