Looks good mate.

Is that the 150mph Turbo?

Al.

No its the 2.2. I went for that engine as its a good mix of power and torque for doing 30-35k miles a year. I changed my philosophy for work cars when I bought this cos I lost over £10k in depreciation on my last car plus £2k on a gearbox so replaced it with this for £2k with 70k miles on the clock. Its now on 104k miles after 12mths and its been faultless.

I might change it for the turbo. Its a cracking engine, we have it in the Zafira GSi but that is going as well for a Range Rover!

Did you mention it was 11 years old?

Well done keeping it in that condition - not easy with so many eediots on the roads these days!!
Al.

Thanks Al  Ive only had it 12mths but done 34k miles in that time. I reckon its still worth £1500 given its condition so Ive lost £500 but I can stand that. I have to say its fannytastic to drive and has been totally reliable and I still think its good looking even amongst todays offerings.

Ive just done a deal to trade mine for a turbo version that has been 'lightly' modified so pushing out around 260bhp and is in the same well cared for mint condition as mine! Its a forum deal rather than a dodgy garage (viewed a few real dogs) so it will hopefully be a good one. I pick it up in the next week or so, should have some fun in that :w00t:

How faster? Is it a 2.0 or 2.2?
J

My existing car is a 2.2 n/a and the new one is a 2.0 turbo

Book figures for the standard cars are:
2.2 n/a = 144bhp / 149lb/ft / top speed = 135mph / 0-60 in 8.2s (hatchback is 7.9s for some reason?)
2.0 turbo = 189bhp / 184lb/ft / top speed = 152mph / 0-60 in 7.0s

Actual road test figures suggest the 0-60 times are approx 0.2-0.3s quicker than book not that it makes any difference.

The car Im getting is mod'd up to around 260bhp so a 30% power hike so will be down around the 6s mark I would imagine.

0-60 times are just for bragging rights in the pub and this aint going to break any records with it being FWD but I reckon it will be lightening from 40-80mph which is where you need it in real terms and for the fun factor which is what this is all about for me, fun on a budget!! The engine is proven to be reliable at this power so shouldnt be any issues with the internals providing its serviced regularly which it has been and will continue to be. The lads on the astra forum reckon they see mid to high 30's mpg on a run cos you only have to tickle them to make progress but I will find out Im sure.

Ok I'm in Canada and wish we could get cars like your opal here. That car looks good. Does it use the Chevy 2.2 ecotec motor? I am guessing that the 2.0 turbo would be the same as the one offered here in our cobalt ss and they are quick cars.

Yes it will probably be the same 2.2 ecotec engine from gm. Car looks ok even though its 10 yrs old!

Was on my way to Edinburgh today and calling in to look at a turbo coupe and my car decided to poop itself and throw the timing chain for no apparent reason. Was cruising at a steady 85mph and there were no noises, crunches, judders, absolutely nothing and the engine management light came on along with the traction control light so got over to the hard shoulder and the engine was already dead. Tried turning it over and the starter spins but the engine doesn't turn so something has gone seriously wrong. BOLLOCKS!!

RAC man confirmed the worst :crying::ohmy::crying:
I thought there would have been some noise from the valves slapping about and the literal internal combustion of the engine itself?

Not a good start to the week......again.

I like the car and was after a turbo but the ones I have viewed have been tatty so will get a turbo engine for mine then I have a mint car with the right engine. Not the way I wanted to do it and will cost a few quid but I suppose it works out better in the long run as I know my car is solid so should be good for a few more years.
