Precisely what happened to my 1.6SR Cavalier SR 28 years ago.
Pootling down town Scouseland, and the engine simply 'flamed out'.
It was a fantastic flyer of a 1.6, bought 18 months' old on 39k as reps' runabout.
It would sip a little oil, but flew - would hit an indicated 120mph with ease (at least 120 genuine allowing for error).

Of course I did the 'wrong' thing and tried starting it - ended up with a cracked cylinder head and 3 bent valves.

All was covered by Warranty, fortunately, but once the replacement head, valves and reprofiled camshaft were fitted, it would barely hit at bog standard 103mph - boo hoo!!

Within a few months I had a 2.8 injection Capri!! :D:D:D;)

Would love to mate but unfortunately the price of fuel over here is extortionate. Since last April I have spent approx £7000 on petrol and a turbo'd V6 or big V8 would double that bill so I will just have to stick a turbo'd 4 in my girls car and stick with that :kiss::lol::lol:

+1 to the above.

they are a hairdressers car......

Thats cos you are spoilt with big wide road for big cars with big engines and cheap fuel!! Over here is congested narrow roads and expensive fuel for small engined cars with eco engines that caress the flowers and trees as they whistle past......maybe thats why its fiddlesticking freezing all the time, we need some V8 global warming on this side of the planet :lol:

Just worked out my fuel bill at a cost of 1.5AUD per litre it would have cost me £4700 rather than the £7000 I have shelled out. We are being robbed

Wow, that does make your fuel expensive.
And yes, a V8 would double your fuel bill no problem.
I'm pushing a 2,000 kg Toyota Kluger around and it's getting on average 10.2L per 100kms.
They have a 200kw V6 in them and I tow a box trailer or a boat on the weekends so it does the job.
I can understand why you guys are getting around in 2L and under engines based on the fuel prices....

It does seem to be the case doesn't it?
Yesterday's 'interesting car' is today's 'hairdresser's car'.

You know what you need ...

A nice fairly compact hatchback - convenient, good access front and back, compact dimensions for today's parking restrictions .....

Lancia Delta Integrale 16V Evo 2
Golf VR6

Clio Williams?

E30 M3 Project car - rebuild. A1 nick will cost a fortune.

How about a REAL Batmobile? (Beemer version I mean)

A few 'interesting options' for you!!

Taking todays 500 mile round trip to Edinburgh i don't think the clio would be very comfortable but the golf and M3 definitely, Lancia........would it make it?!!

More phone calls from Indians then .....
'Where are you calling from?' .... I say to the 'assistance' ....
5 seconds later ..... crackle ..... UK Sir ......
Bollocks!!

I suppose this 240M was part of the 'outside assistance' that wasn't to be touched or altered in the unstable financial climate!!

going back to older cheap turbos, picked up a 93 stealth turbo last year for free, been sitting 9yrs under a tarp..(mitsu 3000gt) 60000miles no rust but in need of work...$5k later (including k on sounds) and lives again..20yr old car when stock 0-60mph in 5.2sec 11psi boost, 310hp..
i got a few trinkets, k+n, intake, gutted cat rear, downpipes, front cat elim, MBC currently 13psi, have gone 14.5 with 9 counts knock, stage 3 puck clutch, walbro 255..
so a pretty mild tune and good for sub 5sec 0-60..putting out at the crank about 350hp, 360 at 14.5psi and a new rear 3" exhaust should see it just over 370hp, sleeper corvette killer :)...not bad with stock injectors and the tiny stock turbos..think i will let it go end at of the year i think so i can get started on my next project, being itching to do some sort of rat rod with a 8-71 blown BB chevy, want to be in the +750hp bracket so it can light up 15" wide tires at will at 20-30kmh

Yeah nice car mate. Is it stock or have you tweaked it?

Got my new jalope last Saturday. Its a 152mph Astra turbo coupe in silver on 96k miles with full red leather and heated seats  stainless exhaust, K&N induction kit, brand new VXR turbo and manifold, Baileys dump valve, drilled & grooved discs, 4 recent tyres all with at least 6mm left on and best of all.......working air con  pink furry dice,me mams ironing board nailed to the back,a drain pipe also sticking out of the rear, a dodgy little Disney character hanging from my tow hitch.I removed the volume button from my Motorworld stereo and replace it with an on/off switch (full blast or nothing!) I took the subframes off my seats so it gives the illusion that its low to the ground and now I can't see over the wheel and drive round with a blow up doll next to me with peroxide blonde hair and eyeliner that looks like it has been put on with a size five tar brush!

It was a bit of a bargain, I only paid £1380 on ebay and its a really tidy car and goes like fook :D Not sure what bhp its running until I get it on the rolling road but its definitely more than stock, I would estimate 250ish. Will get some pics posted when I get chance (and when Ive washed it!) but here is the ebay link......

Bad bits: small scuff to front bumper, small scuff to plastic bump rail on drivers door and the rear spoiler(mams ironing board) has been split but repaired with gaffer tape, spit and dowels.I just need to replace the front O/S and N/S floor pans as I can make out daylight through them and aslo the heater matrix as my feet are constantly wet with the water coming from it.I have removed all the chewing gum from the headliner and it made a handy bouncy castle for my kids. Ive already replaced both back shocks with Bilsteins at £45 each that has doubled the value of it and the other bits will cost me approx £7,500 to make perfect so not expensive repairs for an Astra. As MacDonalds say "I'm loving it!"
