Alternate Wheels/Tires for Losi MTXL

Hey All, before I pull the trigger on this engine upgrade I wanted to get some advice on the setup. I'm not totally clear on which carb to use, or exactly which accessories will give me the most value for the $$ and make the installation as painless as possible. I know I need to replace the air filter because the stock unit won't fit, but I just want a reliable engine I can start that'll provide a big boost in power. Here's my list so far:

WT-1107 Walbro High Performance Carburetor
af288 | 07756 FG Racing Low Profile Air Filter w/Choke Lever
IHP3402 GTB Racing Drill Starter for CY or Zenoah Engines
What am I missing? Any thoughts on the available options for aftermarket carburetors? Would it make the most sense to just go ahead and buy one with the engine? Thanks!

Unless you are going to race it, i would advice you get a carb with a choke lever. Racing carbs are a PITA and the difference is minimal but when you are racing you are chasing marginals and getting a racing carb without choke is one of many small things you do that together make some difference. I am not going to reccomend one over the other because I genuinely cannot tell them apart in a casual setting. For my MTXL I have kept the one that came with the original CY engine and have seen no reason to upgrade. There is a lot more to gain from a better exhaust so I got that. If you want to mess with the carb start with securing better airflow but again, I have found no reason to upgrade from the default one yet.
Are you sure you are not missing the point of the truck? Its not supposed to be fast, its not build to be fast unless you exchange the wheels for truggy, stiffen it up and drive it like a truggy. In which case you should just get the 5ive-B straight up, its a beast. The MTXL have a lot of low end when it works as intended it feels like a monstertruck.
Kaylas dad installed a 71cc in her MTXL and it just tore the truck apart https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCrqegd8keD7UFaTMQaVWjA which was to be expected. Now he install the alloy hop up for the diff made by Area RC and I am willing to place a bet on the engine doing the same to that. So they end up with a truck they have to drive like it was made from bisquits. To much mass for a high rev engine. One of the few places where its good to be all torque.

I don't think my expectations are unrealistic regarding speed. It's just that if I'm going to replace the engine as a sure-fire fix for the reliability problems, I may as well replace it with something that's got a little more oomph. I'm not looking to win any races, but at the same time when I look at the Zenoah engine running in this truck on YouTube, it seems to be MUCH faster than my truck has ever been able to move. It's just a couple of cc difference...
Either way I've run into some budgetary issues that have forced me to hold off on the purchase anyway, so I'm going to spend a little more time tinkering with the current setup to see if I can at least get the thing tracking/steering right first. If I can't find the time over the next couple of weeks to devote to it, then it wasn't meant to be & it'll probably be time to just look to sell.

That 1107 carb does have a choke, it's dam near identical to the 990 but with a choke. I personally would keep the stock carb, as that engine isn't big enough to need a bigger carb. Your better off with a good pipe and that engine. Personally while your there you night as well do a 34cc engine from obr or zenoah for the extra $20-40.
For a filter I'd use the super dome cripple stage filter or a uni 3" filter with an outerwear.

Joey, I feel your frustrations. I'm a newbie in this hobby, newbie as I have yet to buy a 1/5 scale but I've done 2+ years of research including talking to botajell personally. I know their are countless people that get upset, disappointed, and end up leaving the hobby. I've spent countless hours watching YouTube, not just one person or type of vehicle. John (botajell) is the master! He's been in this hobby for over 15 years, and is a great teacher. I recommend you spend sometime watching his channel, he's truly the best. If you decide your over the frustration, and can't go on with your mtxl and want to sell it please let me know and maybe we can work out a deal. Thanks and good luck!!!

If you still looking, the rc4wd super swamper tires look awesome. It's a little bit of work to make them fit as they need to be trimmed for the wheel. But they look awesome!
That motor comes with the 1107 carb, and you should be able to use your stock air filter. The 32cc motor is only 5mm wider than the stock engine. I would also stick with a pull start, I ran my new ESP race ported 34cc for the first time today and it took half a pull choke on and a full pull choke off to have it running. Not sure about the clutch housing on the MTXL I Know the 5ives and DBXL use a shorty clutch housing.

Im just saying but the wt990 carb is a great carb.. Dosent have a choke but you really don't need a choke..Even the 668 carb I never used the choke..3-4 pulls and it will start if its tuned correctly.. The 990 gives a step or two higher throttle response and just makes it run crisper when tuned perfect.. don't use carbs with accelerator pumps unless your just drag racing.. Accelerator pumps are no good for general bashing-off road...

Wound up selling the truck...it was the right move for sure. I can barely find the time to run/maintain my E-Revo & still have a closet full of vintage R/C restoration projects to get to. Maybe one day I'll revisit large scale, but all I can say for sure is that when I do, it'll be electric...at least until I can afford a personal mechanic to maintain it for me.
