it turns out my diff. is fine. But, what is the problem?

hi guys,

here is the problem that i am having right now. Last night, when i lift my rear tires the tires would spin. As soon as i put them on the ground, the rear tires would not move at all.

All the gears are spinning, the pinion, the spur, layshaft gear, and the drive gear ; all were spinning, but not the tires, even the dogbones were not spinning.

I tore up my diff. open today, and all the gears are still intact, there is no sign of damage wall or anything. My diff is in perfect condition aside from the sleeve that was pretty banged up.

So, what could be the problem? Any ideas?

How about the drive splines on the drive cups that go in the diff, are they OK, not stripped?
Thats all I can think of, if the diff outer is spinning but not the drive cups.
 
Yup, they are ok, and the splines are in perfect condition. Not one stripped. Hmmm, I must have over think this situation, i am sure it is something simple at first. :(

It sounds like it could be one of a few things:

1) are you running an alloy gear carrier? This is the part that holds the spur gear onto the layshaft. If you are running plastic, it probably rounded out. Pull the e-clip off the layshaft and pull your gear and carrier off. Check the inside of it. If it is shot, get the alloy carrier and you won't have this problem again.

2) your wheel squares are loose. Take off your back tires and make sure you wheel squares are tight. There is a chance thay have loosened.


If one of these two issues does not solve your problem, check:

1) gear that is on the layshaft that meshed with your diff gear, it may be loose.

2) check your clutch, it may be going.
