I recently purchased the Baja 5R Mustang and I love it. I haven't tuned the engine yet so it is still running rich. Does anyone know if there is a aftermarket exhaust tube that can be used to extend the exhaust to the body's rear bumper area? As it is right now, the exhaust port is over the rear axle and that gets oil all over the rear diff and inside the body, big mess. It would be cool to have the exhaust port out the back like a real Mustang.

I hope HPI gets their act together and brings this car and accessories back. As of right now, I can't even buy a replacement body or any of the good upgrades they show on their website. :(

Thanks!

You can buy some silicone tubing and cut it to length. Make sure it's heat resistant tho!

Thanks, but I'm looking for a kit and for one that would look good. I was hoping that there was a kit for the Baja 5B that i could modify, but I do not see any exhaust mods or kits for the Baja 5x

I saw exactly what your talking about but guy made it himself. I think the got a dual exhaust and added tubing or ran silicon tubing. It's not hard just need to find the dual exhaust. I think it was from a baja or similar.
I've seen them on eBay.
I was thinking of doing that to one of my FG's. I've been trying to buy that Mustang body for years!!?.

It would be a lot easier to help you if you posted pics of the car with the body on and off so we don't have to guess on what would fit .

yes! Thank you! Is that a "HPI" product? I do not see it on HPI's website. Just want to confirm it will fit and work good with the stock 23cc Baja 5R engine?

@1Coopgt - Sorry about that, I just figured everyone knew what the 5R looked like. I'm happy to post pics. The goal is to get the exhaust to come out at the lower bumper, where I will cut half circles on each side and the exhaust will ideally poke out 1/8". I like how the HPI Track Pipe looks and it gets it close to the rear. I would need to add small extensions that took it out to the bumper.

I've run my engine 3 times so it's just now fully broke in and I have only WOT a couple of times. No adjustments made to carb yet, so it's running rich. I want to be sure changing the exhaust doesn't negatively impact performance with this stock engine.

That an aftermarket exhuast, not made by hpi. HPI only makes 2 pipes, one is the stock can, and the other is the pig tail one. Both of which are trash lol. Jetpro makes some awesome pipes you won't be dissapointed ?

@PonyXpress sweet looking rig! I really want one of those Boss Mustang shells for my 5T!

The exhaust I linked above is an aftermarket exhaust made by JetPro. The HPI rear stinger pipe is noisy and worthless. The JetPro will give your motor quite a but more grunt than the stock muffler can. But it will also be a bit louder, as it is a free flowing exhaust pipe, not a muffler. This is one of the best single mods you can give your stock motor to really wake it up.

Dave's Motors also makes a rear stinger exhaust: http://www.davesmotors.com/DDM-Dominator-FAST-Pipe-for-HPI-Baja-5b-5t-BLACK-DDM011-Black.html

And yes, to confirm, anything that will fit the Baja 5B and 5T will also fit the 5R. They all share the same platform. Both pipes are a direct fit.

If you really just want to route your current muffler exhaust out the back, you can just use this kit and cut the tube to the length you want: http://www.davesmotors.com/Silencer-tube-Exhst-12-Black-assembly.html

Good luck and welcome to the madness!

Thanks again guys, great info here. I'm leaning towards the JetPro Track pipe, as it is duel exhaust and gets me close to the rear bumper.

I did find this one on ebay, but the seller could not confirm it will work with my 5R. That said, AnubisBC already confirmed that if it works on 5B, then it should work on a 5R. This looks cool, but not sure about how it would perform or sound.

Don't do that. Cheap meterial and there is no expansion chamber, which that's where 2 strokes get their powerband from,so you need one to get good performance.

Ah..ok. I thought the part near the back was the expansion chamber, and it says it works with 5B. Thanks for pointing that out, as it would have ran poorly I'm sure.

I'll go with the JetPro Track Pipe. The owner at JetPro already replied and said he would throw in a silencer to help get it to the back of the body - very cool of him!

Sweet! Take pics along the way (installation)!!

I agree 100%! He has already built the exhaust kit for me and shipped it.

Once I get this new exhaust kit installed, I can start to tune the carb. Right now it's stock, so it's running rich.

As I get ready to tune the carb, I do have a few questions for anyone who has the Baja 5x

-
How much turning was required to get the engine performing well at both slow and top speeds? I only saw one post and the guy said he made only minor changes to both low and high needles. There must be other forums or threads with this info....
-I've tuned a few Nitro engines and I found it is good to monitor engine temp at the head when turning the high speed, where you WOT several times to get top speed. What head temp is ideal for this 2 stroke stock 23cc at normal running conditions?
-Did you guys stick with the HPI 25:1 oil? HPI oil is available, but most websites show it as out of stock.

I'm thinking HPI didn't sell too many of these, as I don't find too many owners of the 5R out there. The good thing is the engine and chassis are the same. :)

Thanks!

1: there's no specific settings that run the best, becuase where people live have a play into that (elevation, weather, humidity ect), so you just have to tune to your environment.
2: no monitoring the head is a waste of time, if it's running good it's fine.
3: hpi oil is just rebranded Strimmer crap oil from the looks of it, don't waste your time. Go to a motorcycle/dirt bike shop and get a high quality 2 stroke oil, such as Maxima 927, klotz, ect. Also, oil ratio really is a preference but most like to run at 28:1 it's not too lean and not too rich. 25:1 is fairly rich.

Thanks for the advice! Good to know about the oil and the mix ratio. I agree that 25:1 tossed oil all over my rear diff and inside the body. I will try 28:1 with good oil and then tune from there.

Again - many thanks!
