Hi all.!
Just wondered if anyone would know why my monster truck eats spur gears so quickly..?
last week brand new one (15 mins then no teeth)
this week 2nd hand one (10 mins 4 broken teeth)
I was thinking about changing to the steel gear as used on the diff. ?
Is there a down side to this & if i do change will it last longer. ?

Because of the larger spur gear fitted to the MT models, they have a habit of catching the a-arms and stripping the teeth off. Usually it needs to take a tumble for this to happen. One solution is to fit the alloy a-arms/hubs + riser to lift the a-arm out of the way. There are a couple of threads showing this, Super654 has a good picture of the above fitted in his MT thread. :)

Just as Ducky said. The big tires pull the A arm rod into it. Go with an alloy set up and you will mark up the rod before taking out the metal spur gear. If you have a plastic gear carrier you will want an alloy one of those too. The center has a tendency to spin out.

The plastic spur gear is made to be the weak link in the drivetrain.. Are you doing a lot of jumping and landing at full throttle?
Are you stripping them out or breaking teeth? If stripping, check the gear mesh... It should have just a tick of slop in between the spur and pinion.
If breaking/chipping teeth, are you running in a very rocky area? (lots of stones) The stones could be getting caught in between the gears. A gear cover would help with that.

Good luck and let us know,
Trip..

Sorted ..!! replaced the rubbish plastic gear with a nice alloy carrier & 48t steel gear.
All is well after first run (apart from extra heat running metal gears & bearing heating & falling out of plastic carrier)sorted with a few spacing washers..!!
a lot happier now with the drivetrain.
Another question..
How can i make it faster???
Is there any easy tweeks of have i got to buy a bigger motor..?

Do you have a tuned pipe on it; that would be my first choice in the quest for more speed/power? :)

BINGO! Tuned pipe is like buying a bigger motor.:cool2:

Check out the A arm rod after a few runs you will see the bite your spur gear takes out of it and know why it took out the plastic one. Great to hear your back up and having fun.

more power

Yes i have the fg tuned pipe fitted..What about different jets in the carb or something..?

Nope cos the engine can only burn so much fuel, the next step would be either a tuned engine or you'll have to change the gearing. :)

Do you still have that 3 piece pipe? Wanna sell it?

What are you thinking of using it on?

When I put a FG pipe on it made my MB wheelie! Then when I put an older Samba pipe on, it felt like a 2 speed rocket!

It depends on the FG pipe. The one I have is a 3pc I think designed after the 2 piece but for a stadium truck? It is more of a top end pipe I think?

Re fg pipe.

Ive got the one peice black exhaust with the outlet pointing down at the end.
don't know what its called.
