Hey guys, this is a bit of a read, but we're getting a 5th scale track in my area, so I'm in the process of building a Losi 5T for track use. I'm new to the 5T platform, and to 2 stroke in general, so I could use some input. I'm familiar with racing, but my experience is limited to electric (Arrma Infraction) and a paved oval. There's only been a couple times where I haven't been 1st or 2nd on the podium since I started racing, and I'd like to start out 5th scale racing in the same fashion. With a good knowlege foundation before hitting the track. I still haven't even driven either of my 1/5 rigs
My 5T is getting the full "racecar" treatment, and if you've got some input (or things to read) outside of my questions, I'd be glad to dive into it! I'm unable to find much information on the internet regarding 1/5 racing OR the few things I'm asking about.
So, the truck is getting a 32cc Bartelone reed case engine. I plan to throw a stroker crank and accompanying Bartelone head kit on it for a 34cc engine. I'm not exactly sure about a few things.
FIRST being the clutch. I'm sure the stock clutch will get me down the track, but I'm sure there's quicker options out there. I've seen the MIP/MOD clutches, and I'm kind of learning towards one of those. Problem is, I can't really find any comparison information between stock and MIP clutches, and why I'd want one, or their longevity. I've also seen the Turtle Racing snapper clutches and a couple other options. Anybody have information to steer me in a direction here?
Next, the pipe. This one is super confusing to me. I've read a couple times that lots of 5T racers use a buggy pipe to increase low-mid range torque. But how would I go about picking one out without a manufacturer, like OBR, who label their pipe as fitting both 5T and 5B? I cant find any manufacturer actually putting numbers to these things. There are SOOO many pipe options to wrap my head around, and I want the best option for my application. It's hard to proceed here without numbers, and most manufacturers stating things like "ooh, you want the best, we're the best. All 4 of our different styles are going to have you on the podium". Ive got a decent career, but I don't necessarily want to purchase 4 pipes before I figure out what to proceed with. Are there any recommendations here? I've got a good connection with second-hand 1/5 stuff, but don't mind buying new if my second-hand options aren't the best. I can get my hands on a used Samba 5b big-bore pipe(which I've been eyeballing for a while now), Unknown 5T big bore pipe, OBR 5T/B pipe, and a few more.
Also, how would a big-bore pipe treat my truck/ motor vs a regular, non-big bore pipe?
And how would silenced vs non-silenced affect performance? I don't mind noise. Actually, I prefer loud
I've currently got the Losi tuned pipe, but absolutely plan on swapping that out.
Now, Tires and wheels. I got my 5t 2.0 second-hand for $400. Just needed a coil and a body. After going over it, I found the wheels have holes drilled in them under the spokes
, so I'll be replacing. I see the racers using wheels/tires that aren't stock, but I'm unable to find the manufacturer(s). It's hard to pick out tires without a known track surface, but I'd gladly take information here. I'm just excited that this 5T likely won't be costing me the $100/race in tires that my Infraction does
Now, fueling. This is also somewhat complicated without having run the truck yet, and I feel incredibly naive with this subject being I've got an electric race background.
I plan to run either high octane pump gas or a VP option. The pump gas is labeled as "race fuel" and is 100 or 110 octane, can't remember. I've got the carb that comes with the stock G320, but I figure there's a better option for the reed motor I'm going to be running? Are there carb modifications that would benefit me? I've also found the Full Force high-flow fuel line kit. Is that kit going to provide me benefit?
Lastly, ignition. I'll be keeping a box of the NGK CMR7H plugs (and gapper) on hand unless there's a suggestion elsewhere. I found a couple people using MSD coil/wires, and I'm curious if I should follow suit or just keep the stock ones on my cars? I mean, my DBXL I just bash around with so doesn't really matter..spark is spark. As long as it fires. But with the 5T, I obviously want the thing to burn as efficiently as possible.
In conclusion, I've got a few other things to work out... Bearings, I'm designing an intake system similar to Crazy Stu's to play with, diff/shock fluids and servos. And I'll GLADLY take input regarding those things! But the main things I'm currently concerned about are what I've listed.
If you've made it this far in my novel, I REALLY appreciate your time! And if you provide me information that contributes to success in the 5th scale world, I'll repay you by sending a box of pepperoni hotpockets! Or whatever flavor your heart and taste buds desire.
Thanks in advance!
