Hey guys, building a Baja right now, and I've installed a 32cc Zenoah. When putting the cage on, the stock spark plug guard/spoiler is interfering with the spark plug boot. If I get the cage fully installed, its pressing on it hard enough that it is deforming the spoiler upward. Is this normal? I looked up the dimensions of some of the previous engines that used to be included in the RTR's and they are basically identical in height.

I bought the extended roll bar that came on the 5T's, and it resolves the issue, but of course it looks dumb as hell (IMO, anyway). Surely this lack of clearance is not whats intended, right? Is there any aftermarket pieces still out there that give some clearance for the spark plug outside of the roll bar?

Pictures would help !
Never come across that problem and I have fitted all sorts of engines in my 5b and shorty

I don’t know how to get them to embed, so here’s a link to both. This is the cover sitting directly on the spark plug boot, rear of the cage unpinned. If I go to pin the cage, it bows the cover upward and flexes the cage as it mashes the spark plug boot.

Everything is assembled as prescribed in the manual, and I’ve taken it apart a few times to make sure I had everything installed correctly.

I use an aluminum top cover that gives plenty of room between the bottom of the top cover to the top of the plug boot. If I was in your shoes, I would apply heat to the center of that that top piece and I would bend it up with the heat so it’ll stay that way when it cools down that’ll give you plenty of space just heat up the center with a lighter or whatever heat sauce that will melt the plastic a little bit and then you can use like pliers or something where you won’t burn your fingers to give you a clearance between the bottom of that top piece and the top of the spark plug boot, that’s what I would do, then that settled, yeah plenty of room to the top of the plug boot and when you put everything together, you still have room I have a Baja which I’ve had since 2006 when they first came out by HPI. It had two motors in it and I have a brand new motor on the shelf but this last motor that’s in it won’t die so I keep using it and as long as I keep the air filter clean it seems to work great try my idea. You’ll notice when you heat it up. It’ll be real easily in the center. you want to pull that part up to give you clearance then when it cools down it’ll stay that way. Let me know what you think. Thank you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I considered that, but honestly the amount I would need to deform it to give me any clearance would just about trash the piece. What aluminum top cover are you using?

Thanks,Mick Mars!!!
Now Mr Clickerson, it’s been many years since I bought that top cover. I really don’t remember who makes it or where I got it from. If I was you I would try Amazon and look up Baja 5B accessories.
