Hey guys, im new here

looking to know if anyone has tried the hpi 18t pinion with the stock 57t spur,

does this combo give more low down torque or more topend speed?

It is not possible to use an 18 tooth pinion with the stock 57 tooth spur as you cannot adjust the mesh.

You have to buy them in sets...

16/58 (Hostile)
17/57 (Hostile)
18/56 (Hostile)
19/55 (Hostile)

20/54 (RC4WD)

The total amount of teeth is always 74!!

Thanks `bigger the better` im running a 28.5cc with a dom rear pipe

gona get the 18t pinion and give it a try,
hope to get a little more topend without dramatically ghanging gear combos,

rossco great info also, but hpi do an 18t pinion,

its specially designed to run with the stock 57t spurgear
part no. HPI 86498

I should`nt think the mesh will be tight,

the 18t gear is the same overall dimensions as the 17t

i`ll post pics when i get mine mounted

you can run the stock 57T spur with the HPI 18T pinion.

HPI offers a 16, 17( Stock) and 18t pinion that meshes with the stock 57t spur (or aftermarket 57t stock replacement spur)

but with the larger veriaty of gear manufactureing, you ll have to watch the gear choices as Some may not work with others.

Two clips here, sorry about the wind noise,

first clip is stock 17/57 gearing

the second is 18/57,

i was actually surprised how much difference 1 extra tooth on the pinion made:)

Yea the power gets put down now,

compared to the 17t pinion which imo was too low a gearing,

which led to constant wheelspin,

i broke one of the rear wing pins on the second tumble,

any idea if the plastic wing pins can be got seperate?

i can only find them listed with a new wing which i don`t need.

more teeth on the pinion is more top rpm, less teeth on the pinion is more torque. visa versa for the spur.

more teeth is more torque, less spur teeth, more top rpm.

The mesh is going to be very tight.....get ready for a chewed spur.

This is not the case !

This is the case.

I run an HPI 18 with 57 spur & love that combo. It's been through 3 different races & bashed between times with no problems.

I tried the 18 tooth on mine and all I ended up with was 4 melted spurs & 6 fried bearings.

The mesh was far too tight.

So I only use the matched combo's to keep the mesh neat.

HPI has changed the 16 and 18 t pinion just a bit on the pitch, if every thing is setup well, you shoulnt have a problem unless you used someone elses 18t pinion ( RR, HH, DDM, RC4WD, ECT...) i ran the 18t and 57t spur for a long time when it was the tallest option available. sure i toasted some spurs, but don't we all.

If you used a std. 18 tooth gear NOT from HPI then I bet you did, cause it would be just as you said, WAY to tight.

The HPI HD gears made to fit with the 57 seem to work well. I questioned the theory of keeping the same diameter & cutting the teeth differently to make them fit, but it does work. If you look at the gears they do have a strange appearance at first because of the different machining required to make them work.

Now look close at this 18t & the teeth look to be nearly straight out & not really angled like the other gears.
