I have a question:

I was considering to install a 2 speed Gear Box (FG part # 07451) on my FG Competition monster truck.

I was looking at the DDM website and it looks like the gears are made of plastic.
I am hesitant to change from my steel 1 speed gears to a plastic gear 2 speed gear. Any comments from the pros?

My other question: Is it difficult to install the 2 speed gear box? Where can I find an instruction manual online to see what the process involves.

Thanks guys,

-M

You've been on this forum for quite a long time as well as I, so it's possibly 'grannies and eggs' but I remember many of the guys who have tried it, Voo included who state that 2-speed on FG offroad is wasting your time.

These are most applicable to on-road use is what most have said in the past.
Let the thread develop and perhaps some with serious experience of both can comment.

I'll have to disagree with that. I have one in my Marder, granted I haven't really bashed it but I plan to. However when I had it in my MT I didn't like it until I switched to smaller tires ie the stadium tires. I felt with the mt tires I really couldn't get it to hook up how I felt it should. But once I switched to stadium tires I got the desired result.

I sold my 2 speed in a car. There are metal gears available. I run on road mostly and will probably never go back to a 2 speed again. They are fine until they start to wear. They operate with an exposed one way bearing and they don't do well with dirt. I ran mine single speed for quite a while after it stopped shifting just for the free roll of the one way but I have my single speed now almost as free rolling as the one way

Most people will try the 2 speed but will eventually go back with the single speed. If your bashing around not sure why you really need a two speed?
