just puchased an aftermarket k & n style filter and having some problems fitting it to my carson. didnt come with any fitting bolts and im trying to use the original bolts from my old airfilter to mount the stack the new filter attaches to but the bolts are too short? anyone had this problem before? looks like ill have to go to my local engineering shop to buy some longer bolts?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news bud but the K&N style are more suited to cleaner on-road conditions. They are designed to let more air into the engine & therefore have a more open area than an off-road filter so in the more dirty off-road conditions, they will let sand & grit through into your engine & cost you a rebuild. Make sure at minimum you get a foam pre-filter (and oil it) to fit over it & an outerwares cover if you want to be absolutely sure

no problem i don't use the carson in very dirty conditions because im too lazy to clean it all the time! i run it on dry grassy areas and on road mainly. if i plan to take it to dirtier conditions ill change it for a foam filter. thanks for the advice its not bad news it was worth knowing as i wasnt aware of this.

thanks for the advice guys this really is a great website you have probably just saved me an engine rebuild in the long term as i was completely unaware of this ill get a filter sock to go over it and give it a good oiling;)

just use the standard air filter dude with a TGN redneck.. the stock FG airfilter is prob the best there is for offroad & coupled with a TGN prefilter... & if need be outerwears cover.... your carb will be pretty much 100% protected :)

I agree, the TGN pre-filter is awesome, and can be found for about $10.00 on either ebay or TGN. Well worth the price!

Thanks to all for this thread.
I run a K&N - obviously limited filtering.
If / when I make an appearance at the famous DEESIDE this is a necessity!!

I've just 'won' a couple of TGN prefilters - one I'm going to put on when I return, the other a 'reserve'.
Al.
