Any one running a large scale with 3 diffs please read

I have only been into large scale since first of they year and until now only a 2 wheel drive 5b SS. I just received my Nutech Thunderbolt II Pro Racer. I have raced 1/8 scale for about 5 years with 3 diffs. I know there is a lot of variables to the question but what weight oils do people recommend as a starting point. The track I run is fairly loose.

It's hard to compare that thing to anything. I figured most 8th scale buggies a good starting point was 10 center, 5-7 front and 2-3 rear. 7,10,3 is common and makes a stable ride. something this size and on loose you might want to keep the difs loose to keep it from getting squirrely, but you might want the aggressive tighter difs for getting out of them... depends a lot on your driving style too

I would start 30/50/10 or 50/90/20-30. brake bias will also be somewhat determined by the center dif weight. I liked having more back brake. I liked going hard down inside a corner. a lot go that route and the hole in the corner always increases. front brakes make the nose dive and dig in there. if you can tap the back around a bit and slide through it it seemed faster to me. but that's for how I drive

if the sponsor can swing it, a couple extra difs pre filled for testing really helps a lot ;)

So you recommend going that much heaver on large scale over 1/8? I have all my 1/8 set up to my liking just was wonder about the large scale.
 
you are the guinae pig on this one since it's a new ride. grab lots of different oils, start with a base and go from there. you know the routine. drive, change one, record lap times, see what changes help. I know it doesn't sound like much help... I assume a thicker oil for a heavier beast. if a 5lb 8th scale has 10k then a 25lb 5th scale mathematically is 50..

what 8th scale you running and what kind of setup? are you more into smooth driving or agressive. other people can look and see that to toss their 2 bits in
 
I am getting a lot of different opinions and like I said in the beginning there are a LOT of variables to my question but the biggest one all agree on I need heaver oil. This is going to be a set back on getting my TBII Pro running do to the fact I do not have the heaver oil and there are not any hobby shops near me so I have to order it. I looked last night and after 10K the availability and selection gets much less.

being a 1/5 scale..in my opinion you will want to start with 50 weight being the lowest
You can find the diff oil's..just have to search hobby suppliers....
Being DDM..inovative...Tower..A-Main..hobby people...Fg supply....
5th scale pro...Rc nut.....One of these suppliers should have what your looking for....
same for shock oils........Slawhammer

I checked most of those sites and very limited selections. Once again I know there is a lot of variables in my question. What sort of tracks do you guys run on and do they have fairly good size jumps? I talked to Troy at Large scale RC and he is running the MCD buggy with 3 diffs. This is his reply.

The HPI Baja uses 5000 wt diff fluid.

I put 50,000 in the center of my Ultimate Race Runner and it is a little to thick. I wanted it to slip if needed off the jumps, but remain stiff if running on loose stuff. I would probably like to change that to like a 20,000. The front and rear diffs I would run a lighter oil.
Have you run it yet?

What do you think about it?

We have been thinking about bringing some in to try out.

Like I suggested 50,000 in the center...30,000 rear...20,000 front
that woulkd be a good place to start......Again my opinion..Slawhammer
 
I do thank you for your opinion but on all my 1/8 scale buggies I all ways ran heaver in the front then the back so the front pulls harder and the rear does not try to pass the front (spin out). What type of tracks do you run on?

All so are you guys running a buggy, turggy or monster truck?

I usually ran heavier in the front, until I went Xray. I was a team driver for gs racing and loved the buggy but long story short, I went to Xray. I tried my standard dif setup and it ran like crap, to the point I believed I had made a big mistake swapping...

I read about a setup 3/3/5 and thought wierd but I will try. and it was awesome. 2 of us were running that setup at the corcs finals and we qualified 1 and 4 against a really strong field (and not many xrays ;))..

this buggy is like that. it's untried so a lot of it will be you setting the groundwork for others to follow. put what you have in to start because it's a ground basis to start from... stock up on dif oils

you might even talk to the mfg about overdriving... running a different gearing front and rear difs. if you like the front to pull more then taller gearing in the front really makes that happen
 
Xray makes a fine vehicle. I have a friend Ryan Lopez that races for them along for ProLine, OS, Fataba and others full sponsorship.

I might end up regretting it but I am going to start with 20K front, 30K middle and 15K year. After much looking I still have not found a real good selection for diff oil after 10K. Wish I could find some 40K

Just got a reply from Chris at Nutech and he said from the factory the diffs come with F30K,M30K,R10K. Real close to what I am going to start with and only have to change the front. Might just run it like it is to see how it does.

Have anther question and hope some replies so I do not need to start another thread. I am use to shock oil being 19,20,30 weight and so on. Chris said they come with 1K so how does that compare to what I am use to?

Thank you very much this is VERY help full. I think I now have everything I need to get my TBII Pro racer running. Thanks to the Thanksgiving weekend sales saved some money but spent more. LOL
 
I hear you. I have a vrc pipe in my shopping cart as I type. innovative's sale is just too good to pass up. I can't afford it, not sure yet how I will pay for it, but am going to get it.

you guys are lucky to have one of these beasts to play with. they look so impressive.
 
They are only test models but are a work in progress. I am VERY impressed with the R&D work and the real world testing they are doing. They all so listen to the testers and make changes according. I do not know of any other small company that goes to the existent they are going to. They have even pushed back the release date back on most models so then can get them just right before they do release them. Most small companies just sell them with out he effort Nutech is going to!
 
They sound like Align. The heli guys. I was into helis when they came out and the company read the forum and made changes based on what we said, they sent out replcement tuff, sometimes free.. and they are huge now. Good service goes a long way in this day and age
 
Good service this day and age is something you do not find much now that all the BIG conglomerates pushed the little man out. Look at places like Lowe's,Wall mart,Home Depot and so no POOR service. Back in the day when most business where owned by families they new what service was or they went hungry.
