I've read post upon post of upgrading to a Walbro 668 or 990 car for the redcat vehicles, but looking over their site, I see so many more options. Are those 2 carbs the only ones that can be used? Any other models or brands, WITH a choke, available out there?
 
I love the new 998 walbro HP Carb. Instant throttle response! It has no choke, but an accelerator pump.

I have zero starting issues without a choke..if the low end is tuned right and you prime it twice it will start within 3 pulls or less, when warm a tug on the pull start cord. The benefit of have a chokeless Carb, is better flow and more cfm.

I have a 990 also, but see more improvement with the 998.

An accelerator pump is used to squirt extra fuel into the venturi of the carb when you stab the throttle. This really helps with the transition from the low to highend circuit. Also, I notice no lag at all and a harder pull when you get on it. I would recommend this carb for sure, it has more pep then the 990 which is identical, minus the pump.
 
Oh I see. What is the typical price? I did a quick search and saw them anywhere from $70-$55. If that acts like a choke, then that would more than likely satisfy my need to have one.
 
Yeah, I got mine on eBay because it came with a K&N style filter and gaskets for 55$. It is easy to start without a choke. The first time you start it will take the longest, just prime twice and hit the throttle while you pull. After its warm, it is one weak pull everytime ( for me ) lol.
 
I use the 813 as well, works great, got it from DDM for around 45 bucks or 55 cant remember. Have zero problems starting without choke, even down around 0 degrees or 32F I think.

Still has a choke, I'd pass due to the fact it is more restrictive. All of these carbs are the same really as the Venturi and bore diameter are the same. Some of the newer revisions of old carb numbers have metering and various improvements throughout. Really it comes down to this, choke or no choke, pump or no pump.
 
Yes you did, lol. The choke carb will start better, but restrict performance. Its all about what you can deal with. For me, I want the most power, not care free starting the first time I start my truck. Again, once your truck/buggy is warm, it will start up with no issue. This is why im trying to convince you to join the Dark Side of carbs, its worth NOT having a choke :D
 
I've had enough issues to deal with with this truck that not starting would simply push me over the edge. Maybe later after it has run a whole I will switch to a choke free carb, but not yet.
 
hey vince, my son still has a stock carb on his xt w/a choke. i know i prolly sound like a broken record but have you tried choking your air filter using a small plastic bag? even tho my son's xt has a choke i don't use it. i find it starts better using a bag. when you use a bag you are choking the carb bc just like the choke, you are starving the carb of air. i think what makes using a bag so effective is that there is a lil bit of air in the bag but it is all gone after a pull (i use as small a plastic bag as i can) which helps fire the engine. after 1 or 2 more pulls it'll pop off w/the bag still on. just remove the bag & you're good to go. no more dancing w/the choke switch. just prime the carb, bag & choke the filter, pull, it fires, remove bag, go!
 
meathooks, let us know how that 813/998 works out. i was going to go w/an 813 but i heard there were probs w/it not sealing well. also, i read that the 998 is made by rovan or something?
 
I'm lazy, I just like the idea of flipping the choke closed, then opening it. No need to fiddle with a bag when there's a little lever.
 
Yeah, never needed to choke mine. The 998 has the accelerator pump, you can blip the throttle to help start the truck. Its actually more work to choke as all I do is prime and go lol
