I'm rebuilding my first engine and just found out I need a flywheel tool. I am not going to have time to get to the LHS before this weekend. Any tricks or suggestions?

make one, there really not that hard to make!
3 Bolts
1 bit of metal with 3 acuratley place holes drilled, & some nuts to stop the bolts just falling thru, simples yah

Herein lies the beauty of it still being a weedeater at heart. Simply go to any auto parts store and pick up a 3 jaw gear puller the correct size, or alternatively any small engine shop should have a specific puller as well. Shouldn't be hard to find at all.

undo the nut but don't take it right off, then with a wooden or rubber mallet gentley tap the fins while holding the flywheel in the other hand, it will come off as its only an interferance fit - this works on mine anyway.
